Cuba Currency

By backpackguru on Oct 31, 2011
One important thing to realize is that Cuba actually has two currencies. They are the Cuban Peso (CUP) and the Cuban Convertible Peso (CUC). The most commonly used currency by foreigners is the Cuban Convertible Peso which is accepted for hotel payments, souvenir purchases, or taxi rides. In the 1990's the US dollar was accepted around the tourist industry. It has since been replaced by the Cuban Convertible Peso.

Colonial Trinidad, Cuba

By backpackguru on Oct 31, 2011 in Entertainment
Trinidad is a very fascinating 500 year old city. It has tons of colonial architecture given its small and compact size. Some of the most popular places to visit are within a few block radius, an area lined with cobblestone streets, pastel houses, and magnificent palaces. You can wander around the city on your own or take a trip on a horse drawn carriage.

The Valley of the Sugar Mills is a fascinating place to explore. There are 70 sugar mills among other things worth checking out.

Mural de la Prehistoria

By backpackguru on Oct 31, 2011 in Entertainment
One of the tackiest (and therefore for some a "must see" for some) site in Cuba is the Mural de la Prehistoria. There's a valley a few miles outside of Vinales that Fidel Castro visited in 1961. He requested the cliffside be painted with snails, dinosaurs, and cavemen in full color.

There is more to do in the area than look at the mural, so it can be worth a visit. There's a restaurant that's not bad, and you can hire horses if you desire, so don't let the mural taint your views of the area.
