Cairo is the chaotic capital city of Egypt. You're likely to arrive and leave from here and you'll get your first orientation to the area during the chaotic and congestion filled taxi ride from the airport. The city is an excellent place to explore and experience a modern, yet traditional Middle Eastern capital.

Most people think of the Pyramids when they think of Cairo, but there really is so much more to this city. You should easily allow at least three, if not more, days to fully explore even the most popular sights. You should definitely not miss the Egyptian Museum, which is conveniently located in the middle of town. You can spend hours seeing the artifacts that date back thousands of years. The museum is divided into many rooms and you'll find fascinating objects on display, and also scattered almost randomly around the room. In Old Cairo you'll see most of the Coptic sights, which offer you a glimpse into a very different side of the city. You can also take a stroll down the famed Nile River where you'll see plenty of young Egyptian couples out walking and taking in the evening light. The Nile is also lined with some of the city's best restaurants, which offer a delicious tasting of Egyptian cuisine. The food is comparable to Middle Eastern food elsewhere, with only subtle differences in the types of cheese used or the style of hummus. Many of the restaurants along the Nile are more expensive, but the ambiance and the quality of the food make them easily worth the added expense.

Cairo has a great metro system that you can use to travel many places around town. It can be very chaotic and crazy, especially during rush hour, but it is cheap and fast. Do keep an eye on your wallet during your ride though. Taxis are another good alternative. They are reasonably priced if you're a good negotiator, but be prepared to barter hard as some drivers can be quite stubborn in their prices.

Birqash Camel Market

By Bryan (BrainPlug) on Apr 20, 2010 in Entertainment
Make sure you check out the Birqash Camel Market. It's about an hour ride in a taxi from downtown Cairo. There's a small admission fee, but once you're in you can take pictures and wander around all you want. There are camels everywhere and all of the men are there to buy and sell them. There are impromptu auctions which are very interesting. Try not to get trampled!

Making the Most of Cairo

By backpackguru on Nov 9, 2011
Cairo is an amazing city packed full of everything from markets, to monuments, museums, interesting neighborhoods. Oh, and of course the pyramids. Definitely allow yourself more time in Cairo than you think necessary. It's a wonderful city to spend some time and get to know. There are such diverse neighborhoods that you'll easily be entertained no matter how much time you have. Also, head to the pyramids as early as you possibly can. The cruise ships dock in Alexandria and then make the drive to the pyramids in time to arrive in the late morning or early afternoon. If you beat these crowds, your experience will be so much more enjoyable. If you're early enough you may even miss most of the touts. And of course, the lighting when the sun is low makes for the best photographs.

Dahab, of the Sinai Peninsula in Egypt, is a popular destination with divers and backpackers alike. It sits on the edge of the beautiful Red Sea, and offers some of the best snorkeling and diving you can find anywhere. Even if you're not certified to scuba dive, the snorkeling is just of the coast and you can easily wade into the water with a mask and snorkel and have an absolutely breathtaking experience. The best times to enjoy the reefs are at dawn and dusk when many of the fish and sea life are out feeding. If you're more interested in scuba diving there are plenty of unique opportunities in the area to experience it. The Blue Hole is perhaps the most famous dive spot in Dahab. It's popular to do a shallow dive in the Blue Hole and see the beautiful underwater scenery. There is an advanced dive option that takes you through the archways in the area. It is very important to understand that if you do not have the necessary trying and experience, this can be a very dangerous dive. Do not attempt this dive unless you are familiar with the requirements and are comfortable with your skills. It is not worth the risks and is one of the more dangerous dives in the world.

Other interesting sporting options in the Dahab area include windsurfing, kite surfing, rock climbing, camel treks, and horseback riding. Another popular option is to do a desert excursion. Many trips take you by camel back into the desert. You can camp under the stars on the water's edge in a more remote and beautiful setting.

Food in Dahab is generally good. There are some great seafood options, and some hotels offer all you can eat buffets on certain days of the week. These options are fun and filling, and they often include live music or entertainment. In addition to seafood you'll find typical Egyptian and Arabic foods.

Travel Tips

Snorkeling in the Red Sea

By backpackguru on Nov 9, 2011 in Entertainment
Snorkeling in Dahab is one of the most amazing undersea experiences you can have. The Red Sea really is a beautiful as people say. The coral is amazingly colorful, the fish are abundant, and there's a wide variety of organisms you won't find anywhere else. The best way to experience the Red Sea is to have your own mask and snorkel. Then make sure your hotel is right on the water (almost all of them are) and you can head to the water in the early morning and at dusk everyday. These are the best times to see the fish out and about feeding. When the sun is low is easily the best time to see the most happening around the coral, so grab your mask and head into the water.

Take a Camel Trek

By backpackguru on Nov 9, 2011 in Entertainment
Dahab is a great place to do a short camel trek. You can do anything from an hours ride to a multiday trek. The scenery is amazing where the beautiful blue water meets the red desert. It's like no other place I've ever been. Keep in mind, camels are quite uncomfortable when you decide on a duration for your trip.

All You Can Eat Buffets

By backpackguru on Nov 9, 2011 in Food
Some of the hotels offer wonderful all you can eat buffets on specific nights of the week. Wander down the street and you'll see them advertised on signs. They vary in quality, but most aren't bad, and some are quite good. Most include delicious barbeque and a live band for entertainment. The seafood is fresh and delicious. Make a note of what night they are and plan ahead to get a great deal on some delicious food.

Travel Tips

Taxis

By backpackguru on Oct 31, 2011 in Local Transportation
Taxis are a convenient way to get around the city, but as with anything else in Egypt, you have to negotiate hard. You shouldn't have to pay more than 25LE for any taxi ride within the city. You can also get a taxi for the day so you can tour the sites. For this you will pay 10-15LE per site. If you feel you're not getting a fair rate, find another taxi. It isn't hard to wave down a taxi and they're plentiful.

Don't Skip Alexandria

By backpackguru on Nov 16, 2011
A lot of people breeze in and out of Alexandria, but definitely spend some time here if you can. It's got an interesting cosmopolitan feel and is an interesting counterpart to Cairo. It's definitely not to be missed.
