As a follow up to our post last week, How To Create A Travel Blog, we’d like to share some of our favorite WordPress plugins that would be helpful specifically to travel bloggers. Like we said before, if you’re thinking about making a travel blog, you should seriously consider setting up your own site with WordPress.
WordPress is a great blogging tool made even better by the huge community of contributors. There are tons of plugins out there, but here are just a few that we find incredibly useful for travel bloggers. We’ve also listed some of the best “must have” plugins for all bloggers at the end for those of you that are just now getting started with your blog setup.
Editorial Calendar
Staying organized as a blogger is hard enough, and even harder while you’re on the road. This plugin gives you a calendar view of your future posts so that you can efficiently schedule when your audience will read about your adventures.
Travel Map (or download here)
Traveling and maps go hand in hand. There are about a million map plugins for WordPress, but we like this one because it lets you plot a route. Then you can display the whole route, parts of it, or a table version of your itinerary.
Slickr Flickr
If you use Flickr to show off your photos, this is one of the best WordPress-Flickr plugins around. You can display galleries, slideshows, single photos, light boxes, and more.
SEO Friendly Images
Travel bloggers usually have lots of photos, and you want yours to get the attention they deserve, right? Search Engine Optimization (SEO) can help more people find your blog and photos, and be a very important source of your traffic. This plugin gives your photos the added boost that WordPress doesn’t do out of the box.
Finally, here’s a list of must have plugins for every WordPress blog.
- Google Analytics
- Google XML Sitemap Generator
- Akismet or another comment spam filter
- All In One SEO or another similar SEO plugin
- Sexy Bookmarks, Sharebar, or something similar
- CommentLuv
If you know of a good plugin that would help travel bloggers, comment below and we’ll add it to our list.

I’m glad you found the information useful. I was talking to some other travel bloggers and they had no idea about some of the basic plugins that everyone should be using. Especially the SEO stuff! It can help your traffic tremendously. Happy Travels!
To this list I’d add WP Touch, which it looks like you use! Very handy for mobile browsers!
