The Many Faces of Peru

July 26th, 2013 by Kaila

In our opinion, if you are going to visit another country to get an authentic experience, you must learn about the country’s culture. And the best way to learn about a country’s culture is to understand their past. If you are interested in learning about history and ancient cultures, Peru is the perfect place for you! Not only do they have a rich history, they also have modern attractions and world class outdoor activities as well.

Machu Picchu, Peru

The ancient ruins of Machu Picchu, Peru

One can’t discuss Peru without first mentioning the famous ruins of Machu Picchu. Just in case you’re not a Machu Picchu expert,  here is a quick history lesson on the basics of this beautiful and cultural town. The amazing Machu Picchu is one of the great historic archeological sites in South America. It was once home to the Great Inca Empire back in the 15th century. This ancient town is divided into four sections, an urban section, an agricultural section, the upper town and the lower town. The upper town is where the three most famous archaeological treasures of Machu Picchu stand: the Intihuatana, the Temple of the Sun, and the Room of the Three Windows. If you visit, you can explore all of the different sectors of the ruins and learn about their history. We recommend that you get a tour guide to take you through the site; this will give you an even richer experience and better understanding of the area and its history. We recommend that you set up your Machu Picchu tour with Marnella Tours. This was just a brief overview of this world-famous historical site, so if you are interested in Machu Picchu and want to learn more, we highly suggest you plan a trip to Peru.

If you didn’t get enough of the Incas while at Machu Picchu, you should look into visiting some other ancient Inca ruins in the Sacred Valley. The Sacred Valley of the Incas is in the Southern Sierra region of Peru. This land was important to the Incas because it technically was not part of the Empire, but it was the private land owned by the Emperor.

If you are tired of history and your interests are in art and museums, you should tour the Larco Museum, also known as the “Museo Arqueológico Rafael Larco Herrera.” This museum can be found in Lima and is in an 18th century building, built on top of a 7th century pyramid. This museum is especially impressive because it has works of art dating back to 4,000 years ago!

Although we do love art, you all should know that we are also huge animal lovers. In our opinion, dolphins are some of the coolest animals in the world. They are such fun loving and free spirited animals! What do dolphins have to do with Peru, you may ask? Well, Peru has pink dolphins! These “Amazon river dolphins” are not only unique because of their color, but for a variety of other reasons too. They are freshwater dolphins, are extremely flexible so that they can maneuver through the river, and they have extremely long beaks with molar like teeth. Obviously these dolphins are very special, so if you are interested in animals you should definitely invest in a tour to see the dolphins The best ways to see the dolphins are either to raft down the Amazon, or join a tour boat! (Marnella Tours also offers trips to the Amazon.)

Finally, if you are into small islands and even more ancient Peruvian tribes, you need to check out the floating islands of Lake Titicaca. These islands are made of floating reeds, originally created so if the inhabitants were threatened, they could be moved away from danger. The islands of Lake Titicaca are also home to the Uru people, who date back before the Incas. Even more impressive, the Uru people are still around. Unfortunately, over time they intermarried with other tribes and have lost their old language, beliefs and some of their customs. However, these islands are still a very popular tourist attractions because of their unique construction and the inhabitants’ somewhat traditional lifestyle.

As you can see, Peru has a variety of activities and culture to offer to the visitor. From the amazing ancient ruins of Machu Picchu to the vast collections of art, unique animals, and the presence of ancient tribes still around today, Peru has no shortage of attractions.
