Ovoo, Mongolia

The entrance to the ice canyon was marked with an ovoo. An ovoo is a funtional landmark that also has a spiritual purpose. They are essentially small temples to Mongolian ancestors which help guide the way of the nomadic travelers. They are made from stones and animal bones, and usually have some type of flag or cloth at the top.
