WordPress Plugins for Your Travel Blog

Monday, January 17th, 2011

As a follow up to our post last week, How To Create A Travel Blog, we’d like to share some of our favorite WordPress plugins that would be helpful specifically to travel bloggers. Like we said before, if you’re thinking about making a travel blog, you should seriously consider setting up your own site with WordPress.

WordPress is a great blogging tool made even better by the huge community of contributors. There are tons of plugins out there, but here are just a few that we find incredibly useful for travel bloggers. We’ve also listed some of the best “must have” plugins for all bloggers at the end for those of you that are just now getting started with your blog setup. (more…)

Nomad (n): One who leaves his/her comfort zone in search for something other than the status quo

How many times have you been on a trip, something happened, and you thought, “Man, no one is going to believe this story?” Well, we’re here to help. Recently, 3 friends of mine and I founded a film festival aimed directly at travelers. It’s called “The Nomading Film Festival” (nomadingfilmfest.com). (more…)

Phil In The Blank

Wednesday, December 1st, 2010

Phil Paoletta is a guy after our own hearts, simply because he willingly chose to go to West Africa. If you’ve been keeping up with our blog, you know that we spent 3 months in the region back in ’09. It’s an amazing place, and if you read Phil’s awesomely named blog, Phil in the Blank, you’ll get a sense of what it’s like. Don’t let his “loose stool count” scare you away. Seriously. Instead, focus on his love for drawing camels, his desire to eat more Yassa, and his willingness to suffer through long bus rides. We feel your pain, Phil. Really, we do.

By now you’re probably figuring out how this works: I asked Phil a bunch of questions. His answers were insightful, just like his blog. (more…)

Where Is Jenny?

Monday, November 29th, 2010

Jenny Leonard is a self-proclaimed Location Independent Minimalist, and a skateboarder, too. After the holidays and with the start of the new year, she’ll leave home to travel indefinitely, “Or until the money runs out”, she says. She’ll be blogging at WhereIsJenny.com so that the rest of us can follow her adventure. Naturally, I had a few questions for her before her trip. A trip like this (“lifestyle change” is a better description) takes some time to plan and organize, and we like to find out how others prepare so that we can all benefit for our own trips. (more…)

Meet Plan Go Recap: How To Budget Your Trip

Wednesday, September 22nd, 2010

I was honored to be on the panel of speakers at Meet Plan Go in Austin, and it was a great event. I hope everyone learned something and became inspired to travel! Naturally, I spoke primarily about budgeting (being the co-found of Budget Your Trip and all that).

When it comes to long-term travel, everyone always asks, “how much does it cost?“ My wife and I have done several long-term trips, and over time we’ve learned how to put it all together. It’s hard to get all of that “expertise” out in one night during an event such as Meet Plan Go, so I wanted to try to put some words down in writing that will hopefully educate those of you planning a trip. No, we’re not accountants or financial planners or professional tour guides. We’ve just done this enough times to the point where we’re comfortable hopping on a plane, knowing what to expect when we arrive, and how to figure it all out along the way.

Here’s what I talked about at the Meet Plan Go event in Austin (both on the panel and to individuals after): how to figure out your budget, factors that affect your budget, planning not to have a plan, and how to save money. (more…)

Married with Luggage: Warren and Betsy

Sunday, August 15th, 2010

Here’s one to make you think: Warren and Betsy Talbot will leave on October 1st, 2010 to begin a three-year trip around the world. That sounds crazy even to us! Actually, “crazy” isn’t the word to describe it, because we’re very jealous. However, at close to 40 years of age, both members of this married duo have recently had some life experiences to make them rethink their priorities. Warren explained their motivation to us:

In April of 2008 Betsy’s brother had a serious heart attack at 35. Then in August a dear friend of ours had a brain aneurysm. Today both of them are doing great but their experiences shook us and caused us to reevaluate what is important to us. Within a month of her brain aneurysm we decided life is too short to not explore our dreams. On September 1st, 2008 we decided to take a year off to travel the world. After doing some more research and a LOT of dedicated savings, we determined we could stretch out time on the road to more than 3 years. We simply had to take the first step towards our dreams and now we are following them.

These moments in life force us all to reevaluate ourselves and our place in the world. In our experience, many people who look to take a career break or sabbatical or make a major life change are often motivated by some type of search for more meaning in their lives. We’re all behind you, Warren and Betsy, so stick with it.
