Many people remember Bosnia for its war in the 1990s, but the country has come a long way since that devastating decade. There are remnants of the destruction throughout the country, but the people have bounced back and are eager to greet you with warm smiles and enthusiastic welcomes. Bosnia's hospitality is easily seen in the accommodation it has available. Locals have opened them homes and allow travelers to rent rooms for very fair and reasonable rates. In larger cities it is best to have a destination in mind, but in the smaller towns it is easy to find somewhere with a room available for rent on arrival.

There are also hotels in the major towns that cover a range of styles and quality levels. There are plenty of opportunities to find budget accommodation, but there are also comfortable options that are three and four stars. Generally speaking, you won't be disappointed in the quality of accommodation in Bosnia.
Home Stays or Hotels

There are many great options to save money in Bosnia. Staying with a local family typically offers the best deal. Like in many other Eastern European countries, in Bosnia you will often be greeted at the bus or train station by residents with rooms available for rent. They're usually good quality and are a better deal than comparable hotels. Do be prepared to remove your shoes before you enter someone's home. Sarajevo

Sarajevo has plenty of budget accommodation options available, but it can sometimes be tricky to find a place upon arrival. There are plenty of rooms available in homes, but these options aren't as apparent to visitors as they are in other towns. Head to an accommodation bureau near old town once you arrive and they can help you arrange a place for the night. If you're going to be in town more than one night, wait to negotiate a fee directly with the owner for the remaining nights. This will get you the best deal.

If you're on a particularly tight budget you can actually camp down by the Miljacka River. You likely won't be the only one camping there, but do keep in mind that this is considered wild camping and there is no security guard on site.

Mid-range hotels are often in the form of small, boutique hotels and apartments. These can be a great value for visitors who want more than a simple room, but still want to find a good deal. If you're looking for more of a splurge there are a good number of choices available to you as well. Many have restaurants, pools, and a few even have spas available on site.

The most convenient area to stay in Sarajevo is in or around the old town. This is where you will find most of the city's attractions and sights. It also has the most interesting character and is a fun place to explore. If you're interested in doing some shopping, you'll find plenty of local shops to wander through as well.
Mostar

Mostar is a beautiful small town set along the scenic Neretva River. The town is most famous for the Mostar Bridge in the old town area. You'll want to find accommodation that is either in the old town or just a short walk away. If you're looking for the best value, your best option is to find a room in a home upon arrival. There should be plenty to choose from when you arrive in town. Other budget options include small guesthouses and a small number of hostels which you can choose from.

There are also a good number of mid-range options available to visitors. These facilities are slightly more comfortably furnished and often have a restaurant on site as well. If you're looking for more of a splurge then you'll likely want to head a little away from the old town. There you will find more of the high end hotels.
