Tunxi, which is starting to change its name to Huangshan because of the popularity of the nearby mountain, is more than just a base for hiking. The town itself has a lot to offer, such as a beautiful Old Town area worth a day or more, multiple restaurants, art galleries, and shops. Tunxi also makes a great base to visit the nearby old villages such as Hongcun and others around the Anhui province.

The hostels below are all great recommendations, but each has its own advantages and disadvantages. The hostels in the middle of Old Town tend to be a bit older, while on the edge of town the facilities are a bit more modern. Either way, these hostel all have great appeal, so check them out and make your decision wisely before booking.

In the heart of old town Tunxi lies this gem of a hostel with historic charm and a fun, social vibe. Just outside the hostel are all of the shops and restaurants of the historic area of Tunxi, and the nearby local bus can take you up to the bus station or elsewhere in town quickly.

This hostel has private rooms and dorm beds available at a variety of prices. Some of the private rooms are elegantly decorated in an old Chinese style. Dorms are basic but comfortable. Ensuite bathrooms are available in some of the rooms, and are clean and modern.

A common area with a bar, pool table, foosball, and more makes the hostel fairly social as it provides a nice spot for guests to hang out and meet other travelers or plan their day. Free Wi-Fi is included. Bike rentals are also available, as is laundry, luggage storage, tour booking, and more. The onsite restaurant serves meals and can prepare a take-away lunch for those who wish to hike the mountain.

Located very close to the Tunxi bus station, and a bit of a walk from the historic old town, this hostel provides nice amenities and has a friendly staff. The location is very convenient if you want to use Tunxi as a base to visit other nearby locations as day trips, as you can hop over to the bus station in the morning to catch buses to Huangshan Mountain, Hongcun, the other nearby ancient villages, and more. Getting into the historic area of Tunxi is a long walk or a very short local bus or taxi ride. Or, rent a bike.

This hostel has private rooms and dorm beds, both with and without ensuite bathrooms. The hostel is in an older building, but has been renovated with modern facilities.

Free Wi-Fi is available in all the rooms. A common area and an onsite restaurant/bar provide ample space to relax and mingle with other guests. Other convenient amenities include laundry service, tour and transportation bookings, TV, refrigerator, air conditioning, hot water, bike rental, car parking, and a mini-mart.
