Tunxi Hostels for Hiking Huangshan for Backpackers
Tunxi, which is starting to change its name to Huangshan because of the popularity of the nearby mountain, is more than just a base for hiking. The town itself has a lot to offer, such as a beautiful Old Town area worth a day or more, multiple restaurants, art galleries, and shops. Tunxi also makes a great base to visit the nearby old villages such as Hongcun and others around the Anhui province.
The hostels below are all great recommendations, but each has its own advantages and disadvantages. The hostels in the middle of Old Town tend to be a bit older, while on the edge of town the facilities are a bit more modern. Either way, these hostel all have great appeal, so check them out and make your decision wisely before booking.
A social hostel for backpackers, couples, and groups

In the heart of Tunxi, and only five minutes' walking to the heart of old town lies this relatively new hostel with clean, modern amenities and a friendly staff. If you're thinking about climbing Huangshan, they can book an early bus for you and arrange accommodation there as well.
On offer are dorms and private rooms, with and without ensuite bathrooms. The building is new and has air conditioning, modern western-style toilets, and a fun colorful vibe.
The onsite bar and restaurant not only keeps you fed, but also provides a great spot to relax, socialize with other guests, and plan your adventures to the nearby sites such as Huangshan Mountain, the ancient villages, and more. The staff can book tours and arrange transportation.
Also available: free Wi-Fi throughout the entire hostel, security lockers, BBQ, pool table, TVs, car parking, bike storage, laundry, and a mini-supermarket.
Guest reviews claim that this hostel is great not only for the modern, comfortable amenities, but also because it is fairly social without being loud. The location is said to be terrific as well. The downside is that there is no shared kitchen (but plenty of restaurants are nearby).

This fairly large hostel, located in the middle of Old Town Tunxi, seems to have everything. Check out the photos!
First, they have a variety of rooms, from luxury private rooms to basic private rooms, to dorm beds. Some rooms have ensuite bathrooms, while some are shared. The entire building is decorated in the traditional style of the area, making for a terrific old atmosphere, yet with modern faculties and comfortable beds.
The onsite restaurant and bar serves up meals. They also have a shared, communal kitchen. Both of these areas, as well as the common room and game room (pool table, table tennis) provide ample space to relax and socialize with other guests. They also have common balconies overlooking nearby rooftops and the surrounding city. The staff takes the atmosphere very seriously, and does their best to make sure that all guests are having a good time, meeting other travelers, exchanging experiences and ideas, and more.
Laundry, Wi-Fi, lockers, bike rental, games, TVs, nightclub, movies, tour booking, luggage storage, and more are available for guests. They basically have everything a hostel should have, and a terrific location as well.

In the heart of old town Tunxi lies this gem of a hostel with historic charm and a fun, social vibe. Just outside the hostel are all of the shops and restaurants of the historic area of Tunxi, and the nearby local bus can take you up to the bus station or elsewhere in town quickly.
This hostel has private rooms and dorm beds available at a variety of prices. Some of the private rooms are elegantly decorated in an old Chinese style. Dorms are basic but comfortable. Ensuite bathrooms are available in some of the rooms, and are clean and modern.
A common area with a bar, pool table, foosball, and more makes the hostel fairly social as it provides a nice spot for guests to hang out and meet other travelers or plan their day. Free Wi-Fi is included. Bike rentals are also available, as is laundry, luggage storage, tour booking, and more. The onsite restaurant serves meals and can prepare a take-away lunch for those who wish to hike the mountain.

Located very close to the Tunxi bus station, and a bit of a walk from the historic old town, this hostel provides nice amenities and has a friendly staff. The location is very convenient if you want to use Tunxi as a base to visit other nearby locations as day trips, as you can hop over to the bus station in the morning to catch buses to Huangshan Mountain, Hongcun, the other nearby ancient villages, and more. Getting into the historic area of Tunxi is a long walk or a very short local bus or taxi ride. Or, rent a bike.
This hostel has private rooms and dorm beds, both with and without ensuite bathrooms. The hostel is in an older building, but has been renovated with modern facilities.
Free Wi-Fi is available in all the rooms. A common area and an onsite restaurant/bar provide ample space to relax and mingle with other guests.
