Bosnia and Herzegowina Tourist Information
Bosnia and Herzegowina were part of the former Yugoslavia and are located on the Balkan Peninsula. The country gained its independence in 1992 but a brutal civil war followed between the Serbs, Bosniaks, and Croatians. Signs of the war are still quite evident today all over the country.
Despite its brutal past, Bosnia has overcome and developed into a thriving and growing country. It has stunning beautiful landscapes in the form of mountains and shockingly green rivers. There are countless opportunities to experience the outdoors here, either through rafting, kayaking or hiking. Bosnia is also a great country to participate in some winter sports. Sarajevo actually hosted the Winter Olympics in 1984.

Scenic Train Rides
Riding a train through Bosnia is an incredible experience. The route often cuts its way through the most dramatic mountains and runs parallel to a strikingly green river. You'll go in and out of tunnels and be greeted with the most incredible vistas. If at all possible take the train instead of the bus. It might be a little slower and perhaps a little more expensive, but it is absolutely worth it. The countryside you see in Bosnia is a huge part of the experience so definitely don't miss it!

The best way to get a cheap place to sleep in Bosnia is to rent a room in someone's house. People will usually meet you at the bus or train station and show you photos of the rooms they have a available. Usually, but not always, they are of descent quality and are far cheaper the hotel options. It's also a great way to see what daily life is like in Bosnia. Do take your shoes off before you enter someone's home. This is usually standard practice in this country. Also ask where the home is before you agree to going there. You want to be easily accessible to other options if you choose not to take them up on the offer.

There are some great shopping opportunities in Bosnia. Definitely head to some of the major markets and pick up some fascinating souvenirs, particularly if you are spending some time in Sarajevo. If you get of the main streets there are some great finds that aren't too touristy or cheesy. Many of the markets are still organized with like items on one streets. This makes it very easy to comparison shop and ensure you're getting exactly what you want in your purchase. Prices are often negotiable unless they are otherwise marked. Bartering is a fun past time here as well, as vendors are often not too pushy.
