Digby Backpackers Inn
168 Queen Street
Digby, Nova Scotia
Come walk down the fisherman's wharf and talk to the fishermen, or just watch them hard at work. Enjoy the beautiful scenery from the boardwalk, be amazed by the highest tides in the world (Digby is located right at the Bay of Fundy!), or just enjoy a scallop dinner while looking out over the bay.
Daytrip possibilities:
1. Visit Annapolis Royal, the oldest permanent European settlement in Canada. Only 35km from Digby and reachable by local Kings Transit, this is an amazing little village that is sure to captivate you with it’s' charm and history.
2. Witness some of the best whale watching in North America. The Digby Neck and islands offer you the opportunity to enjoy some of the best whale watching around. The Bay of Fundy, with its' high tides, creates the perfect feeding ground for many species of whales. It is truly breath taking.
3. Visit Bear River. A small artist community located in a wooded valley on a tidal river. Houses on stilts, some of the best artists in Nova Scotia and one of the best and most interesting art galleries in Nova Scotia. You also have a chance to learn something about the native people at their native interpretive centre just outside the village.
Travel options from Halifax:
By bus:
Acadian Lines has daily service from Halifax to Digby, arriving at 11pm. The busstop is about 5 minutes walk from the hostel. Walk down Water Street until you see the Digby Heritage Center (about 200 meters on your left set back from the road), walk up past the center. Keep going straight up the hill for 1 block just past the church, then turn left on Queen Street. We are the first house on your left - number 168.
The affordable bus option:
Take the earlier Acadian Bus to Wolfville or Kentville and take Kings Transit from there. It will take you a while, but the route is scenic and you just halved your total cost for the bus. (Just ask for transfer tickets once you get on the Kings Transit and you will go all the way from Wolfville or Kentville to Digby for $3.50).
By shuttle bus:
There are several daily shuttle services that can pick you up from Halifax (right from where you are staying) and drop you off right at the hostel. Nelson's shuttle, or Kathleen's Shuttle are some of them.
By car:
From hwy 101 take exit 26 to Digby. Keep going until you see Robin's Donuts on your left hand side. This is Queen Street. You will find us on your right hand side several blocks down.
Travel options from Saint John:
You can also take the ferry from Saint John, New Brunswick, to Digby. This approximately 3 hour ferry ride will bring you right to Digby. Take a taxi from the ferry terminal, as it is a 6 km walk to downtown Digby.
