It's been influenced by the many cultures in the area including Berber, Carthaginian, Portuguese, English, Bambara, among others. This can been seen in the whitewashed medina and blue doors. At one point in time the majority of the city's population was made up of Jewish traders but today the culture is more apparent in the intricacies of the city.
Today Essaouira is a artistic and cultural city that is filled with craftsmen and street orators. Music is important in the city as is sculpture, much of which is made from the roots of the Thuya tree.
The city sits against the backdrop of a vast bay that provides the city with miles of beautiful sandy beaches. Forested hills are seen in the skyline to the east. Essaouira is one of Morocco's most popular beach destinations. It is called the windy city but is also a popular fishing city which comes to live in the early morning when the port is filled with fishing nets. It's the perfect place to enjoy a seafood meal.

When you arrive in Essaouira's main bus station head in the direction of the Muslim cemetary. Continue along the main road heading south and you will eventually pass the mosque. From there, continue along until you reach the end of the street and can see the Hotel Ibis. Etoile de Mogador is located next door to the Hotel Ibis.
