Bosnia Hotels and Hostels
Many people remember Bosnia for its war in the 1990s, but the country has come a long way since that devastating decade. There are remnants of the destruction throughout the country, but the people have bounced back and are eager to greet you with warm smiles and enthusiastic welcomes. Bosnia's hospitality is easily seen in the accommodation it has available. Locals have opened them homes and allow travelers to rent rooms for very fair and reasonable rates. In larger cities it is best to have a destination in mind, but in the smaller towns it is easy to find somewhere with a room available for rent on arrival.
There are also hotels in the major towns that cover a range of styles and quality levels. There are plenty of opportunities to find budget accommodation, but there are also comfortable options that are three and four stars. Generally speaking, you won't be disappointed in the quality of accommodation in Bosnia.
Finding the Best Prices
There are many great options to save money in Bosnia. Staying with a local typically offers the best deal. Like in many other Eastern European countries, in Bosnia you will often be greeted at the bus or train station by residents with rooms available for rent. They're usually good quality and are a better deal than comparable hotels. Do be prepared to remove your shoes before you enter someone's home. Also confirm that the location is central as you don't want to be stranded in a more rural area.
If staying in someone's home doesn't appeal to you, most towns have hotels that are three or four stars in quality. They are usually good deals. There are a handful of hostels in Bosnia as well, but you are more likely to find a budget hotel or guesthouse than a hotel.
Camping in off the beaten path areas is not recommended as there are still landmines around.
Types of Accommodation
Bosnia has many types of accommodation, typical of what you would find elsewhere in Europe. The most common hotels are two or three stars, but in the major cities you can find both luxury and budget options in abundance. Hostels are not nearly as prevalent as guesthouses, but they can be found and are beginning to pop up more often as tourism continues to grow in Bosnia. Renting a room in someone's home is a popular option as well. They are typically very welcoming, clean and modern. It's usually a very affordable option as well, but does require some flexibility. As accommodation options continue to grow in Bosnia, you are more likely to find exactly what you're looking for, even outside of the major tourist attractions.
