Singapore Hotels and Hostels
Accommodation in Singapore is abundant and diverse. You can expect to find a wide variety of hostel options if you're traveling on a budget. Mid range hotels are generally quite comfortable and offer standard amenities, and luxury accommodation typically has all the frills and often a roof top pool with a nice view of the city. It is important to note that accommodation, like food and entertainment, is generally more expensive in Singapore than it is elsewhere in Southeast Asia. You can expect to spend about double the price, if not more, for the same level of quality. Still, it remains substantially cheaper than its western counterparts, particularly if you stay away from western chain hotels.
Do consider location when you select a hotel in Singapore. It is important it be near public transit, which will make navigation of the city far easier. Some of the most popular neighborhoods in Singapore include Riverside and Orchard Road. Most of the budget accommodation can be found in the Balestier, Newton, Novena, and Toa Payoh areas.
Finding the Best Prices
A general rule of thumb is that prices in Singapore will be about two thirds what you would expect to pay for equivalent quality accommodations in the United States or Europe. If you're coming from elsewhere in Southeast Asia this might cause a bit of shell shock, but there are a few tips you can follow to keep prices down. First, there are no shortage of hostels in Singapore, so do some searching and find one that is centrally located and comfortable. Prices aren't generally negotiable to the level they are elsewhere in Asia, so you will likely get a better deal if you book in advance. Singapore is also a large city, so it helps to have a destination in mind on arrival so you don't have to navigate the streets and shop around for a good deal. Finally, high end hotels are quite nice and reasonably priced. If you're at the end of your trip, consider a splurge before your long flight home. Find a hotel with a nice pool on its roof and relax in the evening a great view of the city lit up at night. It's worth the extra money.
Types of Accommodation
Singapore has many types of accommodation, mostly comparable to what you would find in the United States and Europe. There are many western chains, including the Sheraton, Hilton, and Crowne Plaza. While these options are quite nice and luxurious, you can often spend a fraction of the price and get comparable quality if you choose an Asian or local chain. Most of the high end hotels are in the Orchard Road or Marina Bay neighborhoods.
Budget options are quite nice in Singapore as well. Many are hostels but it is possible to find single, private rooms for affordable prices as well. While the cost might seem expensive compared to elsewhere in Southeast Asia, they are quite fair for most major metropolitan cities.
