Affordable Things to do in Ocho Rios, Jamaica (Tours and Activities)
Ocho Rios is a port town on the north coast of Jamaica. A former fishing village, it's now a resort with a cruise ship harbor and a busy bay beach that's lined with hotels. The surrounding parish of Saint Ann is home to rainforest, rivers and waterfalls. Dunn's River Falls is a terraced, 180m mountain waterfall with lagoon pools, surrounded by trees. Ocho Rios was developed for tourism in the mid-1980s. Tourism has endowed the town with a great eating scene, lively nightlife, and a plethora of guiding companies offering everything from scuba diving to zip-line tours. Throw in some of Jamaica's best waterfalls on its doorstep, and Ocho Rios makes an excellent base for exploring the north coast. With all of these fabulous attributes, Ocho Rios is a great place to experience, and there are several options for budget friendly activities and tours in or near the city.
After pickup at your Ocho Rios hotel, spend some time perusing the diverse shopping arcades and craft markets. Take a tour of the Wassi Art Factory, which produces distinctive pottery made by Jamaica's local artisans. Drive through Fern Gully, a vibrant forest of trees and ferns growing up the steep hills on either side of the road. Stop at the Coyaba Botanical Gardens, home to a collection of local and international plants, flowers and trees. Climb Dunns River Falls with the aid of your local guide. Walk up the tiers of smooth, flat rocks to the top of the 600-foot (180-meter) falls. Splash in the refreshing water and take the opportunity to snap spectacular photos. View Cuba, about 90 miles to the north, on exceptionally clear days. The plantation produces cassava, sugar cane, coffee, bananas, and various spices, some of which you will taste during your tour. Climb on to the back of a sturdy camel and enjoy a trek around the plantation. Feed the resident ostriches, visit the butterfly aviary and watch Farmer Joe climb a 30-foot coconut tree. Explore the plantation's points of interest, including the botanical gardens and the Great House.
Following pickup from your Ocho Rios hotel, transfer to the all-terrain vehicle (ATV) rental center. Get a short safety briefing from your expert guides and get outfitted with equipment for your adventure. Rev your engines and take off through Jamaica's backcountry, following your guide through dense forests, local villages and the varied Caribbean terrain. Zoom around the Llandovery and Richmond estate grounds, both former sugar plantations from the 17th century. Learn about this era in Jamaica's history through your guide's commentary. Arrive at a pristine, white sand beach and ride easy to a pirate cove.
