Climbing Gros Piton

By backpackguru on Nov 8, 2011 in Entertainment
An experience you want to have, if you're the outdoor sort, is to climb to the top of Gros Piton. Gros Piton is the taller of the two pitons on the island. You can do the hike in about four hours round trip, if you're in descent shape. You climb about 2,600 ft to reach the top. There are tours available, usually through your hotel, but it's completely reasonable to do the hike on your own.

To get there head south of Soufriere like you're going to the volcano and sulfur springs. You'll pass the Ladera resort and eventually see a green sign that says "Gros Piton Nature Trail." Follow that road, which is in bad condition. You will need to have a 4 x 4 vehicle. You'll end up in a small village where you head to the visitor center. Here you can hire a guide for $25 pre person. A guide is required, and tips at the end of your hike are expected. Youll definitely save some money if you arrange the guide at the visitor center as opposed to booking a tour though.

Bounty Rum Distillery Tour

By backpackguru on Nov 8, 2011 in Entertainment
If you're looking for something different to do head to the Bounty Rum Distillery. You can do an hour and a half Rhythm and Rum tour that give you all kinds of information on the history of sugar, how rum came to be, and a great overview of the distillation process. There are some well done displays that illustrate local architecture. You get to wander through a typical rum shop and hear some Caribbean music. And of course, there's the opportunity for some free samples.

You'll find the distillery at the Roseau Sugar Factory in the areas largest banana plantation. They're open between 9am and 3pm on weekdays only. The cost is $5.00.

Friday Night Street Party

By backpackguru on Nov 8, 2011 in Entertainment
Head to Gros Islet on a Friday evening to enjoy some great night life and the popular street jams. It's a weekly party that attracts literally hundreds of people, both locals and tourists and vacationers. It's been a tradition in the area for at least a decade, and its only gaining in popularity. They put large speakers at all of the major intersections so that everybody can enjoy a range of music styles that they play. You can hear anything ranging from soca, hip hop, and reggae. People dance and celebrate, or you can take advantage of the opportunity to enjoy some local dishes. Its a very cheap option to grab some traditional food, because barbeque grills are on every street corner. You can have anything from meats, to fish, to traditional conch. It's one of the best ways to experience island life at its finest.
