It\u2019s a fantastic place for anyone who loves nature and hiking, outdoor adventure and laidback island vibes. Bali has become so popular that it\u2019s one of the world’s top tourist destinations for 2023! <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

It attracts millions of visitors each year due to its unique blend of natural beauty and cultural heritage but Bali’s popularity isn\u2019t without its drawbacks and there are many reasons why Bali isn\u2019t so popular. <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In this post, I\u2019ll share <\/em>why Bali has become so popular <\/em><\/strong>over recent years and some of the reasons why it may not be the perfect destination for everyone.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

To begin with, l want to be clear that we love Bali and certainly think Bali is worth visiting<\/a>! It\u2019s an island with a lot to offer but at times it can be misrepresented. It\u2019s no longer the untouched tropical paradise as Instagram and other media platforms portray and if visiting based on these expectations you will be disappointed. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nevertheless, there are countless reasons why Bali is so popular and if you don\u2019t have unrealistic expectations you’re going to love Bali as well. Its location in the Indonesian Archipelago does mean that the Island of Gods is a tropical destination including beautiful beaches lined with palm trees and misty rainforests, a huge draw for many visitors! <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The island also has a unique cultural heritage which differs from the rest of Indonesia having evolved its own traditions and belief system. This combined with a laidback boho vibe, warm welcoming locals and a budget-friendly lifestyle has attracted many travellers to Bali\u2019s shores. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

So, let’s dig a little deeper into why Bali is so popular with tourists, digital nomads and ex-pats.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s certainly somewhere to go if you\u2019re in search of tropical island vibes and warm temperatures but also a great place for nature and wildlife. The island’s volcanic mountains, iconic rice terraces, and dense jungles offer countless opportunities for outdoor adventure and exploration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Indonesia is an affordable country<\/a> to visit and Bali is no exception<\/a>, making it an accessible holiday destination for most people. The reason Bali is so cheap is that Indonesia is a country which has a very low cost of living. This means that things like labor, food and accommodation are a lot cheaper than they would be in the West where the cost of living is high.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This makes it a great option if you\u2019re backpacking or looking for a cheaper holiday. It\u2019s perfectly possible to travel to Bali on a budget. For example, you\u2019ll be able to find budget-friendly accommodations in Amed<\/a> as well as many other locations around the island. Local street food and inexpensive transportation are also accessible without breaking the bank!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That said, there are a few caveats concerning affordability in Bali. The major one is that even though Bali is affordable it can also be very expensive! Large international businesses have jumped on the Bali craze and numerous luxury resorts in Bali<\/a> and western-style restaurants, fine dining and private excursions are available, meaning it\u2019s easy to blow through any budget.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

4. Unique Culture & Heritage<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

I hear many people say Bali has lost its culture and has become too commercialized. In some instances, this is true but it only takes leaving the busy populated areas of south Bali to witness its true cultural heritage. The best way to do this is to head to different areas while you\u2019re visiting Bali on a 3-week holiday.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

We were lucky to locally attend the annual Gulungan ceremony with our Balinese friends which was one of the most beautiful days we had in Bali! We visited three different temples where we took part in prayer before being blessed by a Balinese priest. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The island is home to thousands of temples, shrines, and traditional villages that reflect this unique blend of Hinduism and Balinese culture. We had a unique experience but you can participate in cultural activities such as dance performances, art and craft workshops and cooking classes to immerse yourselves in the local culture. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

When people think of Bali, most will picture idyllic beaches and iconic rice terraces but the island of Gods also offers a wide range of adventure and outdoor activities. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Snorkeling and scuba diving<\/a> are very popular activities which allow you to explore Bali’s incredible underwater world<\/a> which is buzzing with marine life. Surfing enthusiasts gather on the island’s beaches in the hunt for some of the best waves in the world, while countless hiking trails provide stunning views of Bali’s mountains and rice terraces if you prefer to stay on land. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Unknown to us when we headed to Bali we would soon be eating some of the most delicious meals during our whole Southeast Asia trip. Traditional Balinese cuisine is characterized by the use of aromatic spices and fresh herbs, resulting in rich and flavorful dishes such as Nasi Campur and Babi Guling. A few of our favorites included Indonesian classics like Mi Goreng and Nasi Goreng – ultimately, Fried Rice and Fried Noodles!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bali’s culinary scene is also well-known for its thriving caf\u00e9 culture, serving up everything from freshly brewed coffee to delicious smoothie bowls. Cafes in Bali are some of the top hang-out spots for locals and ex-pats alike! <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Whether it’s sipping coffee in a trendy caf\u00e9 or sampling street food from a local warung, Bali’s culinary scene is a delicious reflection of the island’s cultural diversity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

7. Natural Beauty<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

In my opinion, why Bali is so popular is mostly down to its natural beauty. It\u2019s so far away from what we have back home and offers that picture-perfect holiday destination. The island\u2019s natural beauty is breathtaking. Its picturesque landscapes of rice terraces, volcanic mountains, and white sandy beaches attract anyone seeking to unwind and relax.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And that\u2019s not to mention the abundance of waterfalls on the island. For anyone who has \u2018stand under a waterfall\u2019 on their bucket list Bali is the place to make this a reality. The island is full of majestic waterfalls, all different shapes and sizes but ultimately stunning in their defiance of the earth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

8. Fantastic Accommodation<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

As mentioned previously, Bali is an affordable destination which means that it\u2019s possible to stay in some unbelievable accommodations for very reasonable prices. If you\u2019ve ever dreamt of staying in a luxury resort in Bali<\/a> with private villas and infinity pools but never thought you\u2019d be able to afford it, then Bali is the place to go. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

That’s not to say that there aren\u2019t other accommodation options because there\u2019s a wide range of choices to suit everyone. You\u2019ll also find cheap hotels in Bali<\/a>, along with budget-friendly hostels<\/a> and guesthouses, glamping sites and eco-friendly resorts that provide a sustainable and luxurious way to connect with nature! You’ll also find plenty of family-friendly hotels in Bali<\/a> as well as plenty of romantic hotels for couples in Bali<\/a>, too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One thing we loved about Bali was that many of the island’s accommodations are designed with traditional Balinese architecture, featuring open-air spaces and tropical gardens. Bali’s fantastic accommodation options are unbeatable, comfortable and memorable which contribute to making it a popular holiday choice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

9. Gateway To Indonesia<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

The island of Gods is often considered the gateway to Indonesia, and for a good reason. As one of the world’s most popular tourist destinations, Bali’s International Airport serves as a hub for both international and domestic flights, making it easy to visit other parts of Indonesia. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

While we spent 6 months in Bali we also spent a month travelling around other parts of Indonesia. Our favorite hot spots included surfing in Lombok, sailing around Komodo National Park <\/a>and searching for orangutans in Bukit Lawang.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So, if you\u2019re heading to Bali, exploring other islands in Indonesia is something worth considering, and there are plenty to choose from! The stunning natural beauty of Java, the easy-going vibes in Lombok, or the ancient temples of Yogyakarta are less than an hour away. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

10. The Balinese People<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

The final reason why Bali is so popular has got to be because of the Balinese people. They are known for their warm and welcoming hospitality, rich cultural traditions, and devotion to their Hindu faith – believe it or not, they have 13 national holidays! <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Balinese were always friendly and happy to engage in conversation, helping us with directions and teaching us their traditions and language. You can easily take part in workshops where the Balinese happily share their crafting skills. With talents in weaving, painting, carving, and music it\u2019s a fun and immersive experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We found them to be proud of their unique customs and ceremonies, which are an integral part of their daily life on the island. You\u2019ll notice offerings being placed and blessed on the street, outside homes and businesses, temples and schools, every morning before they start their day. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

5 Reasons Why Bali Isn\u2019t So Popular<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Now let\u2019s dive into why Bali isn\u2019t so popular and why it might not be the perfect holiday destination for you!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1. Over Tourism<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

One of Bali\u2019s biggest issues is that the island has experienced significant development in recent years, leading to overcrowding, traffic congestion, and environmental degradation. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some people have complained about the commercialization and loss of authenticity, while others criticize the excessive party scene in certain areas. And although these complaints have validity it\u2019s not in all areas of Bali and it\u2019s a sure disappointment if you visit with unrealistic expectations!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For those of you who want to avoid the overpopulated areas of Bali, it\u2019s best to head away from the south and towards the central mountains, north shore or east coast. It\u2019s here that you will experience a more authentic Bali with fewer crowds. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

2. Stray Dogs<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Another problem Bali faces is the number of stray dogs that are everywhere and often a sad presence on the island. They can be seen roaming the streets and beaches, scavenging for scraps and seeking shelter in the shade. It\u2019s quite a troubling thing to witness as they are often in poor health and pose a risk of disease. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

There are multiple organizations and volunteer groups set up in Bali to help with animal welfare, which if you\u2019re interested in volunteering is a great way to gain experience, to help support and manage the problem. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Balinese government has implemented various programs to manage the population of stray dogs, including vaccination campaigns and sterilization programs, but the issue remains an ongoing challenge. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

3. Congested Roads <\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Bali’s traffic is notoriously congested and unpredictable which can put a damper on anyone\u2019s travel plans. It\u2019s a major issue and with the increasing number of tourists and locals alike, certain areas in the south are a no-go during peak hours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The narrow and winding roads of Bali and inadequate public transportation, alongside the lack of proper traffic management have contributed to the chaos on the island. It\u2019s not uncommon to see long lines of vehicles inching their way through the streets, causing frequent traffic jams and delays. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The situation is further worsened by the unbelievable number of scooters, which often weave in and out of traffic, making it challenging for larger vehicles to move smoothly. We have even seen scooters use pedestrian sidewalks to skip traffic, which in turn becomes a safety issue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

4. Pollution<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

What many people fail to realize when researching Bali is the island’s pollution problem. This is likely the biggest reason for not visiting Bali and is the one thing everyone needs to acknowledge. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Due to the lack of proper education, inadequate waste management and the rapid expansion of infrastructure and tourism activities, the result is severe air and water pollution. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

You\u2019ll find littered beaches, streets and overflowing trash cans are a common sight, indicating the lack of effective waste disposal systems. The island’s pristine beaches and lush forests are increasingly threatened by plastic waste and pollution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Local rivers and streams are heavily contaminated with chemicals and waste, posing a severe threat to the island’s marine life and ecosystems. However, there is hope with organizations such as Sungai Watch implementing innovative strategies to address the problem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Balinese government and other various organizations are also taking steps to manage the issues. That said, Bali’s pollution still remains a significant challenge that needs urgent attention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

5. Hustlers & Scammers<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Although we didn\u2019t personally experience scams in Bali it\u2019s not uncommon to hear stories from both locals and tourists. Scammers in Bali will often target the unsuspecting with various tactics, such as fake tour packages, overpriced merchandise, and rigged ATMs. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Common scams include taxi drivers who overcharge for their services or take passengers to unwanted destinations, money changers who offer lower rates, and street vendors who sell counterfeit goods. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s therefore essential to stay vigilant and do your research before making any bookings and to avoid disappointment. Always use a reputable taxi company, we like to use Grab, which is Indonesia\u2019s version of Uber.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
