Every rental car booking comes down to the same choice. You either go with a name you recognize from the airport concourse, or you go with a company you have never heard of that has forty cars and a phone number that turns out to be a WhatsApp account. Most people pick the familiar option without thinking about it, which is fair enough. It is also, in a lot of countries, the more expensive one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The price you see and the price you pay<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Chains advertise a headline rate and make their margin on everything that comes after it. The insurance upgrade at the counter, the second driver, the young driver surcharge, the airport concession fee, the fuel you buy at their pump price. A booking that looked like 18 euros a day can leave the desk at 55, and none of it is technically hidden. It is all in the terms you clicked past.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Local companies mostly do not work that way, because they do not have the volume to make it worthwhile. Their overhead is a yard, a couple of staff and a fleet they run for eight or ten years rather than two. In Albania that translates to small cars from around 7 to 12 euros a day outside the summer months. In Greece it starts closer to 10, and rises sharply on the islands in August, but the ceiling is still well below what the international brands charge in the same week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What happens at the counter<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The other difference shows up the moment you land. Chains put you in a queue, then on a shuttle bus, then in another queue. Local firms tend to bring the car to you: arrivals hall, hotel, ferry port, wherever you say. You sign, take the keys and go.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On the Greek islands this matters more than it sounds. If you are hopping between Naxos, Paros and Santorini and picking up a car for three days on each, the difference between meeting someone at the quay and finding an office on the other side of town adds up fast. In Albania it is the same story arriving late into Tirana, where the flight schedule sends half the arrivals through after eleven at night.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Deposits and credit cards<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

This is where the chains lose people entirely. Nearly all of them require a credit card in the main driver’s name and will block anywhere from 800 to 2,000 euros on it. If you only carry a debit card, or your limit is not high enough to swallow the hold on top of your holiday spending, you do not get the car. It happens constantly, and there is no negotiating at the desk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Local operators generally take cash or a debit card at pickup, and the deposit is low or waived. Some ask for nothing at all beyond your license and passport. The catch is that this varies per car and per owner rather than being company policy, so read the specific listing rather than assuming anything.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Where the chains genuinely win<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Not every trip suits a local rental, and it is worth being honest about that. If you need a one way rental across a country, or across a border, the international networks handle it and small firms usually cannot. If you want a car that is less than two years old with a warranty and roadside assistance in every direction, that is what you are paying the premium for. Business travelers who need a proper VAT invoice and a corporate account are better off with a chain, too. And if something goes wrong at two in the morning in a country whose language you do not speak, a 24 hour support line has real value.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For a week of driving around one region, though, most of that is insurance against problems you are unlikely to have.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Albania<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Albania is close to the perfect case for renting locally. Public transport thins out quickly<\/a> once you leave the Tirana to Durr\u00ebs to Sarand\u00eb corridor, and the reason people come is mostly outside it: the coast road over the Llogara pass, the mountain villages around Theth, the road down to Gjirokast\u00ebr, and Lake Ohrid. You need your own wheels, and the international brands have limited presence and high prices there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Booking through\u00a0local car rental in Albania<\/a>\u00a0gets you pickups in Tirana, Durr\u00ebs, Vlor\u00eb, Sarand\u00eb, Ksamil and Shkod\u00ebr, plus airports just over the border in Podgorica, Pristina and Skopje if you are combining countries. Take something with reasonable ground clearance if the mountains are on your list, because road surfaces deteriorate quickly once you turn off the main routes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Greece<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

In Greece, local rental has always been the default. On the smaller islands the chains barely bother, and the companies by the ferry docks of these islands have been renting the same fleet of Pandas to everyone stepping off the ferry<\/a> for three decades. What has changed is that you can now book those companies in advance instead of hoping there is something left, which matters in July and August<\/a> when everything on Santorini and Paros gets booked up weeks ahead of time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Before you sign<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Check the excess on the car and what it costs to buy down, then check what your travel insurance or credit card already covers, because people routinely pay twice for the same protection. Take full to full on fuel and never prepay a tank. If you plan to cross a border, say so when booking, since you will need a green card and usually a fee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At pickup, photograph the car from every angle including the wheels, bumpers and roof, and get any existing damage written on the form before you sign it. Two minutes of work, and it is the only thing that helps you at drop off.
