We loved visiting San Jose and, yes, it's absolutely a city that any traveler should visit. By the end of our time here, it felt like a second home. During our first trip to San Jose in the summer of 2007, we fell in love with its authentic atmosphere and access to many day trips. We've been back several times since then to experience it even more.

Whether you're a a backpacker or on a weekend getaway, this city has a lot to offer. Any local will tell you what makes it special is the spectacular nightlife and terrific shopping.

San José is the capital city of Costa Rica. While most people arrive and depart from this city, few actually spend significant time here. Those who do will find several great museums, a nice nightlife scene, colorful markets, and a few good day trips.

6 Reasons to Visit San Jose

1. Nightlife

This city has the best nightlife in all of Costa Rica. You'll find a diversity of clubs and bars that are fun to explore. Check out the reggae bars, dance clubs, and sports bars (where you can enjoy a soccer game) while you're in town.

2. Shopping

There are a number of unique things you can buy in the city including jewelry, handbags, and wood workings. Make sure you check out the Central Market.

3. Museums and Attractions

Despite most people rushing through town, there are a number of museums, plazas, and interesting buildings that are worth checking out.

4. Food

Most people miss out on local cuisine during their time in Costa Rica, but the capital city offers the best opportunities to eat like a local. You can sample favorite local dishes such as chifrijo, gallo pinto, rondón, and casado. You should also wander through the Central Market and dine at one of the many local restaurants.

Is San Jose worth visiting in the Winter?

Winter is the high season for travel in San Jose, so expect more visitors and higher prices. Even though this destination is not very touristy, in the high season it's busier than usual because this is when most visitors come here.

Things to Consider Before Visiting San Jose

Not As Family-Friendly
While there are some family activities, it's not as child-friendly as other destinations.

Not As Romantic
For couples, this destination does not have a great vibe for romance compared to other places.

Getting Around
The area is not very walkable, and public transit is not great here, so it might be difficult to get around without arranging your own transportation.
