Budget Hotels in Aswan, Egypt, on the Nile

Jump to:
Aswan, a city on the Nile River, has been southern Egypt's strategic and commercial gateway since antiquity. In ancient times it was a garrison town for the military campaigns against Nubia; its quarries provided the granite used for so many sculptures and obelisks. There are plenty of things to see, but it is not a place to hurry. Aswan contains significant archaeological sites like the Philae temple complex, on Agilkia Island near the Aswan Dam. Philae's ruins include the columned Temple of Isis, dating to the 4th century B.C. Downriver, Elephantine Island holds the Temple of Khnum, from the Third Dynasty. The Nile River is wide, languorous and beautiful here, flowing gently down from Lake Nasser around dramatic black-granite boulders and palm-studded islands. Colorful Nubian villages run down to the water and stand out against the backdrop of the west bank’s desert escarpment. The old area offers many laid-back budget hotels which provide an opportunity to swim in the river and linger for a few days to recover from the rigors of travelling and temple-viewing.
