Huaraz is a large town in the Cordillera Blanca region of Peru's Central Sierra. It's at an elevation of about 3100 meters so if you're arriving directly from Lima you might need a little time to acclimate. Many visitors enjoy hiking during the dry season which is between July and August. During this time the temperature is nice and the weather conditions are ideal for hiking. There are also several celebrations and festivals during this time.

The town has a decent tourist infrastructure and you'll find a good number of shops and markets that sell the necessities. There are a few food markets around town and many hostels have a communal kitchen that you can use to prepare your own meals. There are a good number of affordable hostels in the area and most have a wonderful staff that can give you any advice on hiking or trekking. It should not be hard to find a reasonably priced place to stay in Huaraz.

It offers impressive views of the Cordillera Blanca and is a great place to base yourself while you're in the area. The staff is excellent. They speak English and the owner is an experienced mountaineer of the Cordillera Blanca. If you need any information about trekking or climbing, then you're in good hands.

This is a great place to stay with wonderful amenities. They can pick you up at the bus station for free and they offer a great complimentary breakfast every morning. Breakfast includes coffee, tea, juice, and a variety of vegetarian dishes. The hostel also has a public computer, free wi-fi, and a television area. There's a nice terrace area and a fireplace where you can relax as well.
