Huaraz is a large town in the Cordillera Blanca region of Peru's Central Sierra. It's at an elevation of about 3100 meters so if you're arriving directly from Lima you might need a little time to acclimate. Many visitors enjoy hiking during the dry season which is between July and August. During this time the temperature is nice and the weather conditions are ideal for hiking. There are also several celebrations and festivals during this time.

The town has a decent tourist infrastructure and you'll find a good number of shops and markets that sell the necessities. There are a few food markets around town and many hostels have a communal kitchen that you can use to prepare your own meals. There are a good number of affordable hostels in the area and most have a wonderful staff that can give you any advice on hiking or trekking. It should not be hard to find a reasonably priced place to stay in Huaraz.

La Casa de Maruja is a favorite place to stay with budget travelers from around the world. It offers impressive views of the Cordillera Blanca and is a great place to base yourself while you're in the area. The staff is excellent. They speak English and the owner is an experienced mountaineer of the Cordillera Blanca. If you need any information about trekking or climbing, then you're in good hands.

This is a great place to stay with wonderful amenities. They can pick you up at the bus station for free and they offer a great complimentary breakfast every morning. Breakfast includes coffee, tea, juice, and a variety of vegetarian dishes. The hostel also has a public computer, free wi-fi, and a television area. There's a nice terrace area and a fireplace where you can relax as well.

It's in a historical part of the city and it's just a ten minute walk from the Plaza de Armas. Several bus stations are also close by.

The staff here is knowledgeable and helpful about any hikes you might be interested in. They also speak excellent English. If you have any questions or concerns don't hesitate to ask.

The hostel is family run and the owners are very nice and helpful. They serve a nice breakfast every morning in the central courtyard and they can answer any questions you might have. This hostel is reasonably priced and offers one of the best values in Huaraz.

If you're traveling to the area to enjoy the outdoors then this is a nice place to base yourself. It's particularly popular with groups of travelers who want comfort and affordability. There are both private rooms and dorms available. Private rooms include twins, doubles, three bed, and four bed rooms. Dorms sleep up to six people.
