Is Wat Chedi Luang Varavihara Worth Visiting in Chiang Mai?

Known for its massive ruined chedi and historical significance, Wat Chedi Luang Varavihara is a lesser known religious site in Chiang Mai.

This is not the most popular attraction in Chiang Mai, but if you have some extra time, it's worth seeing. This is not the most busy spot in the city, but it can still see large crowds during peak times and during peak travel season.

What is Wat Chedi Luang Varavihara?

Wat Chedi Luang Varavihara is a Buddhist temple in Chiang Mai, Thailand, known for its massive ruined chedi, which dates back to the 14th century. Located in the old city, the temple complex also houses other religious structures, including a viharn and several smaller chedis. The highlight of the temple is the towering chedi, which once stood at over 80 meters tall and was the tallest structure in ancient Chiang Mai. Although partially destroyed by an earthquake in the 16th century, the chedi remains an impressive architectural and historical landmark, attracting visitors and worshippers from around the world.

This might not be the best for kids, as it's more oriented towards adults. This is a fairly romantic spot for couples, so be sure to come if you're traveling as a couple. Even though it's free, backpackers and budget travelers don't often enjoy visiting the religious site.
