Yes, Shanghai is absolutely a port city that any traveler should visit. During our time here, we had so much fun. We first visited in the summer of 2013 and have returned several times. During our time here, we fell in love with touring the street food scene and wandering down the Bund.
Whether you're a traveling as a family, a couple, or a backpacker, this port city has a lot to offer. Any local will tell you what makes it special is the great museums and attractions and amazing food.

1. Museums and Attractions
The city's sights mix culture with modern innovation. From the futuristic skyline and the iconic waterfront area known as the Bund, to the classic Yu Garden, there are a diversity of sights around the city. There are also museums like the Shanghai Museum, which educate visitors on Chinese culture.
2. Food
The city's cuisine has a long history with many distinct traditional dishes. The foods incorporate a lot of soy sauce and sugar and you'll find most dishes are rice based as opposed to using wheat products. Popular local dishes include the famous Shanghai soup dumplings, steamed crab, and braised pork. The city is also famous for its snacks, which can be purchased at one of the many snack houses or street stalls.
3. Shopping
The city has many large shopping malls with department stores, name brand fashion, and trendy shops. It is also known for its cheap electronics and tailor-made clothes.
4. Nightlife
A night out can quickly become very expensive. Many of the venues are spread out so you'll likely spend at least some of the time in a taxi. The Bund is one of the most popular areas for nightlife, but this area also has the most expensive bars and clubs. They often offer impressive views of Pudong and the Huangpu River though.

The weather in Shanghai is fairly warm during summer, and stays around 28°C (83°F). But it can get as warm as 32°C (89°F) at times, too. It's also quite rainy during this season, so be prepared.
The peak season for travel is summer in Shanghai, so expect to see more tourists than usual. This destination is quite popular with tourists, and in the high season it's even busier than usual as this is when most people like to visit. Expect crowds to be large, and prices to be a bit higher than normal. However, there's plenty to do here this time of year, too.
The activities of the city are numerous, and this is a great time of year to explore all of them. From family-friendly attractions to romantic getaways, as well as budget-friendly things to do, there's something for everyone. Famous landmarks, museums, tours, and more are all available. You'll also find it quite easy to get around on foot, because this is a very walkable port city, especially in the nice weather. This is the low season for travel in Shanghai. This destination is quite touristy, but in the low season you'll see fewer crowds and much better prices.
The weather in Shanghai can be quite cold during winter, and averages around 4°C (39°F). But be prepared for much lower temperatures, too.
You'll like that you can take public transit easily in the winter, too. You can get around quickly while avoiding bad weather if needed. During this season it's fun to experience the famous sights and museums, the cuisine, and the nightlife scene. Also, you'll be able to soak up the big city atmosphere.

What makes Shanghai a budget-friendly destination? Or not?
We stay in hostels whenever we visit Shanghai. We also love doing our own food tours and sampling the many local dishes and street food around town.
We stayed at a budget hotel that was a small family place, and it was not just cheap but also clean and in a good location. I loved all the amazing restaurants and they had good prices, too. My partner thought that it was worth it to splurge a bit on some tours but I honestly think that just walking around to see the major sights was just as enjoyable and didn't cost anything. The subway was really cheap.
How can you save money during your time in Shanghai?
We ate so many different dishes in town, and the prices were really cheap, particularly away from the touristy areas.
What was your favorite thing about Shanghai?
We stayed at a great hostel and spent most of our time exploring, shopping, and eating.
