Machu Picchu is probably the most famous and visited site in Peru. It's an ancient Incan city that is located high up in the Andes. No trip to Peru is complete without a trip to Machu Picchu, but it is not a cheap place to visit.

The closest town to to the ruins is Aguas Calientes (officially called Machu Picchu Pueblo). This is a small town at the bottom of the valley and it provides the easiest access to the ruins. The town itself is not that interesting, but it offers the most affordable accommodation options near Machu Picchu. There is one expensive lodge within the grounds of the ruins, but any hostels or affordable guesthouses are found in Aguas Calientes. Most visitors arrive late at night and leave early in the morning, so simple accommodation is really all you need.

The hostel also offers impressive views of the surrounding area including the Aguas Calientes River. The surrounding area has restaurants and you're not far from the main street in town. It's also just a short walk to both the train and bus stations in town.
