Shopping

By Bryan on Oct 28, 2011 in Souvenirs
Basseterre is a town that's all about shopping, as most cruise ship passengers come into the docks and are presented with lots of souvenir shops. Better deals can be found in more of the locally owned places. The restaurants are pretty good, too. Just wandering around the quaint Caribbean town is a worthwhile experience, too.

The National Museum of St. Kitts

By backpackguru on Nov 8, 2011 in Entertainment
You can check out the National Musuem of St. Kitts which can be found in a large room on the bottom floor of the old Treasury Building. The Treasury Building is in downtown Basseterre. In the museum you'll find all kinds of things including old maps and photographs hanging on the wall. You'll also see artifacts including tools and pieces that illustrate what life in St Kitts' was like, including the culture and heritage. It's worth wandering through to learn a little about the history of the island including war, slavery, sugar, as well as independence. If you want to take a break from the beach and learn a little about where you're visiting head over here. It costs only $1.00 to enter.

Take a Plantation Carriage Ride

By backpackguru on Nov 8, 2011 in Entertainment
While you're on the island of Nevis, consider taking a plantation carriage ride. Most leave from the Hermitage Plantation Inn and do a two or three mile trip that carry you through a variety of historic areas. The view can be scenic and you really have the feel of royalty while you're riding on the traditional carriage. You get to go through some scenic back roads and you can get a little insight into everyday creole life. The carriages are surprisingly authentic and made from West Indian mahogany in a victorian style. It's a great way to experience island life how it used to be.

Hiking in the Area

By backpackguru on Nov 8, 2011 in Entertainment
Gingerland has a variety of day trips and walks you can do to help you really experience everything the island has to offer. There are a good number of guided nature tours you can go on. The guide will help you spot unique wildlife that is native to the island. You'll also get a much better understanding of the Nevis landscaping. A highly recommended hike is Devil's Copper and the New River Springs, which will take you through the rainforests and get you close to wildlife. Alternatively, you could climb up Mount Nevis Peak for some absolutely stunning views. This is a quite difficult hike though so be prepared.
