Hamah is a great place to spend a couple of days in Syria. There are some wonderful day trips to the "Dead City" and the beehive houses. You can also reach some fascinating local markets in nearby towns. If you're here on a Friday, consider postponing your day trips a day or two because transportation won't be running during the religious days. Instead, you can spend the day wandering around Hamah itself. It's a lovely city to explore and the water wheels really are unique. They're quite large, completely made of wood, and still functioning. You can actually hear the wood creeking from a great distance away. On Friday afternoons and evenings everybody leaves the mosques and head to the parks. It's a great time to people watch and intermingle with the locals while they relax with their friends and families.
