Fort William is a town in the western Scottish Highlands. Basking on the shores of Loch Linnhe amid magnificent mountain scenery, Fort William has one of the most enviable settings in all of Scotland. It's known as a gateway to Ben Nevis, the U.K.'s highest peak, and Glen Nevis valley, home to Steall Falls. Magical Glen Nevis begins near the northern end of the town and wraps itself around the southern flanks of Ben Nevis, a magnet for hikers and climbers. The glen is also popular with movie makers – parts of Braveheart, Rob Roy, and the Harry Potter movies were filmed there. The nearby Nevis Range Mountain Resort has ski runs and forest trails. In the town center, the West Highland Museum focuses on regional life and history. To the northeast, Ben Nevis Distillery explores whisky production. The Fort has carved out a reputation as ‘Outdoor Capital of the UK’, and easy access by rail and bus makes it a good place to base yourself for exploring the surrounding mountains and glens.
