Is Chapel Hill worth visiting?
We loved visiting Chapel Hill and, yes, it's absolutely a town that any traveler should visit. By the end of our time here, it felt like a second home. We first visited Chapel Hill in early in childhood and returned many times through the years. During our time here, we fell in love with its thriving sports scene and student-oriented atmosphere.
Whether you're a traveling as a family or a couple, this town has a lot to offer. Any local will tell you what makes it special is the amazing museums and attractions and fantastic nightlife.
Chapel Hill is home to the University of North Carolina. The campus is at the heart of the town and is beautiful to explore. There's a botanical garden and several museums. Nearby Franklin Street is where you'll find the biggest concentration of restaurants and shops.
5 Reasons to Visit Chapel Hill
1. Museums and Attractions
Many of the museums are affiliated with UNC. A highlight of many trips is a visit to the Morehead Planetarium and Science Center. Hours can vary, so check the schedule ahead of time. Also worth visiting are the Ackland Art Museum and the Carolina Basketball Museum.
2. Nightlife
Most of the nightlife is centered around the student population. Franklin Street has a number of bars where students hang out. There are also parties hosted by fraternities and sororities. Things are quieter during the summer months when students are mostly gone.
3. Food
Students often eat on Franklin Street, which has a diverse mix of casual and slightly nicer restaurants. You'll find Indian food, Mediterranean, Italian, and Greek. The city also has excellent barbecue and other southern favorites.
4. Shopping
There are a mix of local shops, larger shopping centers, and suburban malls. There are also weekly farmer's markets that are fun to check out.
5. Authenticity
Chapel Hill has an authentic vibe where you can experience local culture, cuisine, and activities without the large tourist crowds of other popular destinations.
Is Chapel Hill worth visiting in the Summer?
Summer is the shoulder season for travel in Chapel Hill. This destination is not very touristy, and in the shoulder season it can become fairly quiet. Things quiet down during the summer months because most students leave town.
