During our first trip to Shenandoah National Park in 2002, we fell in love with its diverse hiking trails and colorful fall foliage. We've come back several times since then to experience it even more. Shenandoah National Park runs along the Blue Ridge Mountains through the state of Virginia. The main corridor is the beautiful Skyline Drive, which passes by viewpoints and scenic spots. There are also miles of hiking trails, beautiful waterfalls, and iconic views.

Reasons to Visit Shenandoah National Park

Hiking
There are more than 500 miles of trails in the park that pass through varied landscapes and take you to beautiful viewpoints. Visitors range from weekend visitors to long term hikers who come to experience the breathtaking beauty and serene setting.

Skiing
You'll find skiing and snowboarding at nearby Massanutten Resort, which is near Harrisonburg, Virginia. It's a family-friendly setting with slopes that are classified as "easiest", "more difficult", and "most difficult".

Food
There are several restaurants along skyline drive where you can pick up a casual meal like fried chicken, burgers, or pasta.

Things to Consider Before Visiting Shenandoah National Park

Museums: Shenandoah National Park isn't a place that's filled with a huge number of sights and attractions. While most people spend their time outdoors enjoying the setting, there are museums in the area, as well as visitor centers that have exhibits and informative displays.

Nightlife: Most people don't associate Shenandoah National Park with a lively nightlife scene. There are a number of breweries in the area, but most people enjoy stargazing and sitting by the campfire at night.

Shopping: Shenandoah National Park isn't exactly a shopper's destination. There are a handful of gift shops along Skyline Drive were you can pick up souvenirs or t-shirts.

Getting Around
The area is not very walkable, and public transit is not great here, so it might be difficult to get around without arranging your own transportation.
