Caracas is the capital city of Venezuela, and also the country's largest city. It's in the northern portion of the country and is close to the Caribbean. While Caracas may not be a major travel destination in Venezuela, it can offer interesting insight into the country's urban character. It has a great art, culinary, and music culture that truly bring the city to life. The beautiful Mount Avila overlooks the city and separates the city from the Caribbean Sea. Many locals and visitors alike head to the mountain as a quick escape. You can reach it by taking a cable car that carries you up to the SWaraira Repano Park at the very top.

The city itself highlights the economic inequalities throughout Venezuela. You'll find the wealthiest residents living in grand mansions on the eastern side of the city, and on the western side you'll find barrios, which are the poorest neighborhoods in town. The streets themselves are almost always congested with traffic. There's also a subway system but you can expect it to be extremely crowded with frequent delays. Do use caution when exploring Caracas as it does have a reputation for crime and violence. Use common sense and understand the neighborhoods before you begin to explore. It's also wise to travel in groups, preferably with someone familiar with the city.

You can easily fill several days exploring the sights around town. Some of the more popular options include La Plaza Bolivar, La Casa Natal de Simon Bolivar, Museo de Arte Colonial, Universidad Central de Venezuela, Jardin Botanico, and Parque del Este.

Caracas also has excellent restaurants and a vibrant nightlife. The cuisine is surprisingly international in large part due to the large influx of immigrants to the area from Europe and the Middle East following World War II. You'll find plenty of shopping malls to explore as well. One of the most popular is San Ignacio Mall which is popular with a young crowd.

Travel Tips

The Teleferico

By Bryan on Oct 31, 2011 in Entertainment
Take the Teleferico, the cable-car that takes visitors up the Avila. There's a beautiful view of both the caribbean sea and the city. The price is BsF 25 (approx. US$ 5.81) to get a round-trip ticket to the teleferico. Take the trip as early as possible before an afternoon haze obstructs your view from the top of the mountain. There are a few restaurants and many food kiosks at the top. There are also activities for kids. Hiking trails branch off from the top, but you'll need a map since they are not well marked.
