Our Next Adventure: China and Mongolia

Monday, April 4th, 2011

We’re very excited to announce that in a few months we’ll be embarking on our next adventure: a two month journey through China and Mongolia. This is something we’ve had in the works for a while now, and we’re finally making it a reality. After our round the world adventure in 2009, we decided it was time to buckle down and make some money. Well, that got old. Now we need another vacation. And as many of you have learned, you can’t follow a year-long vacation with a one week vacation. It has to be at least a few months…. (If you haven’t learned the proper length of vacations yet, shame on you!) (more…)

Frugal February

Monday, February 28th, 2011

February is coming to a close, and that means that Amy and Kieron’s blog is now full of travel budgeting awesomeness. For the last month, the theme of their blog, Don’t Ever Look Back, has been “Frugal February”. It’s been loaded with budget travel tips and advice from experienced travelers in the blogging community. We’d also like to thank them for letting us post an overview of Budget Your Trip. If you’re planning a trip, check out all of the great advice, tips, and resources on their blog.

Also, we wrote a guest post entitled “10 Ways to Save Money While Traveling” on GotSaga. You’ll probably notice that our first piece of advice is cut out alcoholic beverages. We know you won’t be too happy about that (neither are we), but it’s actually quite effective if you’re strapped for cash.

Happy Travels!

Phil In The Blank

Wednesday, December 1st, 2010

Phil Paoletta is a guy after our own hearts, simply because he willingly chose to go to West Africa. If you’ve been keeping up with our blog, you know that we spent 3 months in the region back in ’09. It’s an amazing place, and if you read Phil’s awesomely named blog, Phil in the Blank, you’ll get a sense of what it’s like. Don’t let his “loose stool count” scare you away. Seriously. Instead, focus on his love for drawing camels, his desire to eat more Yassa, and his willingness to suffer through long bus rides. We feel your pain, Phil. Really, we do.

By now you’re probably figuring out how this works: I asked Phil a bunch of questions. His answers were insightful, just like his blog. (more…)

Where Is Jenny?

Monday, November 29th, 2010

Jenny Leonard is a self-proclaimed Location Independent Minimalist, and a skateboarder, too. After the holidays and with the start of the new year, she’ll leave home to travel indefinitely, “Or until the money runs out”, she says. She’ll be blogging at WhereIsJenny.com so that the rest of us can follow her adventure. Naturally, I had a few questions for her before her trip. A trip like this (“lifestyle change” is a better description) takes some time to plan and organize, and we like to find out how others prepare so that we can all benefit for our own trips. (more…)

Working While You Travel?

Monday, November 8th, 2010

Working while you’re traveling can be an efficient way to lengthen your trip. Some careers transfer smoother than others to a traveler’s environment. A lot of factors need to be considered before you take the plunge. The steps below will help you make your decision to work or just travel, and to find ways to make money while you’re on the road. The Packing List: What To Pack?

Monday, November 1st, 2010

Going on a long term trip, for multiple months, or even a year? When we planned our first multi-month adventure, our friends and family kept asking us “how do you pack for a trip like that?” Our answer: “Well… uh… I have no idea!”

Now that we’ve done it a few times, we know how to answer that question. And we’re not the only ones. We’ve assembled some of the best packing list items and advice from people who have actually survived their trips.

We’re looking beyond the obvious, here. Everyone knows that you need shoes and underwear (everything else is optional). We wanted to list the things that you might not have thought of if you’ve never been “backpacking” or traveled on a minimal budget, or never visited a developing country. Below you will find a list of items that may have never occurred to you to throw in your bag. The items on this list come from experienced travelers who have been there and done that. (more…)

Meet Plan Go Recap: How To Budget Your Trip

Wednesday, September 22nd, 2010

I was honored to be on the panel of speakers at Meet Plan Go in Austin, and it was a great event. I hope everyone learned something and became inspired to travel! Naturally, I spoke primarily about budgeting (being the co-found of Budget Your Trip and all that).

When it comes to long-term travel, everyone always asks, “how much does it cost?“ My wife and I have done several long-term trips, and over time we’ve learned how to put it all together. It’s hard to get all of that “expertise” out in one night during an event such as Meet Plan Go, so I wanted to try to put some words down in writing that will hopefully educate those of you planning a trip. No, we’re not accountants or financial planners or professional tour guides. We’ve just done this enough times to the point where we’re comfortable hopping on a plane, knowing what to expect when we arrive, and how to figure it all out along the way.

Here’s what I talked about at the Meet Plan Go event in Austin (both on the panel and to individuals after): how to figure out your budget, factors that affect your budget, planning not to have a plan, and how to save money. (more…)
