Yes, Cologne is worth visiting for a number of reasons. This is a city that everyone should explore, and we loved our time here. We first visited in winter 2022 and have returned several times. During our time here, we fell in love with the traditional Christmas markets, the grand cathedral, and the vibrant city energy.
Whether you're a traveling as a family, a couple, or a backpacker, this city has a lot to offer. Any local will tell you what makes it special is the amazing christmas markets and fantastic museums and attractions.

Cologne is a city that combines both modern and historic features in a very compatible and fun style. From the impressive Cologne Cathedral to the many museums and outdoor spaces along the river, Cologne offers something for everyone. The city is also well connected to the rest of Germany and Europe with a very popular train station right in the heart of town.

1. Christmas Markets
Cologne is one of the top Christmas market destinations in Germany. You'll find many different markets spread around town that offer ice skating, curling, warm drinks, and local dishes. Foodies will appreciate the many samplings of local holiday favorites while shoppers will be able to pick up gifts and Christmas decorations that are locally made.
2. Museums and Attractions
At the heart of the city is Cologne Cathedral, which is stunningly intricate and highlights High Gothic architecture. It is one of the largest cathedrals in Europe. Other famous sights around town include Cologne City Hall, the Wallraf-Richartz & Ludwig Museums, and Hohenzollern Bridge.
3. Nightlife
Head to one of the many beerhalls to check out the local nightlife scene. Make sure you try the local beer, Kölsch. Some of the most popular places for night include Ona Mor, Pepe, and Engel & Weiss.

For a sweet treat, there is no shortage of donut shops with decadently decorated toppings.

The Old Town is large, but its mostly been rebuilt with modern buildings. There are plenty of shopping areas where you can buy name brand clothing or sample sweets.

This destination is quite popular with tourists, and in the high season it's even busier than usual as this is when most people like to visit. Expect crowds to be large, and prices to be a bit higher than normal. However, there's plenty to do here this time of year, too.

The activities of the city are numerous, and this is a great time of year to explore all of them. I found a lot of free and cheap things to do here, such as the famous Cathedral, the public parks, the zoo, and lots of affordable food options.
What makes Cologne a budget-friendly destination? Or not?
It's generally an affordable city by European standards, but there's not as much to do as there is in many nearby cities. I've been to the Christmas markets a few times and they're great, but go on a weekday to avoid the crowds.
How can you save money during your time in Cologne?
There are plenty of cheap restaurants where you can grab a bite to eat near the train station.
What was your favorite thing about Cologne?
We pass through Cologne all of the time because it's a major transit city. The cathedral is right near the train station, and it's a must-see, even if you only have an hour or two.
