This town is a good place to visit for two to four days. During our first trip to Mainz in the spring of 2023, we fell in love with the access to the many scenic towns along the Rhine River. We've come back several times since then to experience it even more. Mainz is a scenic city that sits along the Rhine Rivers. It has a charming old town with many half-timbered houses and historic town squares. It makes a great base for exploring the many towns along the Rhine Rivers.

Reasons to Visit Mainz

Food
There are plenty of restaurants and cafes that serve local food. There are also wine taverns where you can sample the local wines and dine of regional specialties.

Historical Sights
Filled with beautiful squares and cobblestone streets, this is a nice old town in a pleasant city.

Museums
It's an old university town with a number of historical sights. Check out the Church of St. Stephan, Mainz Cathedral, the Gutenberg Museum, and the Museum of Ancient Seafaring.

Shopping
Head to the boulevard of Am Brand near the cathedral for some of the town's best shopping. There are shops that line the street and it's a nice area to walk around.




Is Mainz worth visiting in the Summer?

The high season for travel in Mainz is the summer, so expect to see more tourists than usual. This destination is quite touristy, so in the high season it's busier than usual. You'll see larger crowds and longer lines, as well as higher prices. On the other hand, there's plenty to see and do at this time of year because everything is open.

You'll find the weather to be very nice here during summer with average temperatures around 19°C (66°F).

You'll also find it quite easy to get around on foot, because this is a very walkable town, especially in the nice weather. During this season it's fun to experience the museums and landmarks and the historic old town.

Winter is the low season for travel in Mainz. This destination is quite touristy, but in the low season you'll see fewer crowds and much better prices.

The weather in Mainz can be quite cold during winter, and averages around 2°C (35°F). But be prepared for much lower temperatures, too.

You'll like that you can take public transit easily in the winter, too. You can get around quickly while avoiding bad weather if needed. You'll find plenty to do during winter, as you'll be able to browse through museums, enjoy a meal at a restaurant, and browse around the old town.
