Uppsala is one of Sweden's oldest, yet most dynamic cities and is the historical and spiritual heart of the country. Uppsala has a student population of almost 40,000, making the city peaceful by day and lively by night. The youthful atmosphere manifests most strikingly in the sheer number of laidback cafes and bars - as well as many bicycles on the streets. The city's charm also lies in its sheer picturesque value, with the beauttiful River Fyris flowing through the center, flanked by pathways and still more cafes. History buffs have plenty to soak up here, with Gamla (Old) Uppsala just up the road.
