Is Rapid City worth visiting?

Rapid City is worth visiting for two to four days so that you can explore everything that the city has to offer. Rapid City is in western South Dakota and it makes a great base for exploring the many national parks, state parks, and other landmarks in the area. The city offers convenient access to Mount Rushmore, but you'll also find Badlands National Park and Custer State Park nearby. Within town there are many museums and activities that highlight the region's unique geology and wildlife. During our first trip to Rapid City in 2017, we fell in love with its diverse range of nearby activities. We've come back several times since then to experience it even more.

Reasons to Visit Rapid City

Museums
You'll find a wide variety of museums and landmarks nearby. Popular places to visit that aren't far from town include the Mammoth Site of Hot Springs, the South Dakota Air & Space Museum, and the Journey Museum & Learning Center. There's also the Museum of Geology and the National Presidential Wax Museum. And of course, there's the iconic Mount Rushmore.

Hiking
The region is filled with national parks, state parks, and natural areas with wonderful hiking trails. You don't have to travel far to get into nature and experience some of South Dakota's best natural beauty.

Food
You'll find local restaurants in town that serve local specialties such as chislic (grilled meat), fry bread, and walleye (a local fish.

Shopping
Rapid City has some interesting local shops as well as larger malls and shopping centers.




Things to Consider Before Visiting Rapid City

Nightlife: Most people don't associate Rapid City with a lively nightlife scene. You'll find some places with live music and good drinks, but the city isn't really known for its nightlife scene.

Getting Around
The area is not very walkable, and public transit is not great here, so it might be difficult to get around without arranging your own transportation.

The Cost
