The Packing List: What To Pack?

Monday, November 1st, 2010

Going on a long term trip, for multiple months, or even a year? When we planned our first multi-month adventure, our friends and family kept asking us “how do you pack for a trip like that?” Our answer: “Well… uh… I have no idea!”

Now that we’ve done it a few times, we know how to answer that question. And we’re not the only ones. We’ve assembled some of the best packing list items and advice from people who have actually survived their trips.

We’re looking beyond the obvious, here. Everyone knows that you need shoes and underwear (everything else is optional). We wanted to list the things that you might not have thought of if you’ve never been “backpacking” or traveled on a minimal budget, or never visited a developing country. Below you will find a list of items that may have never occurred to you to throw in your bag. The items on this list come from experienced travelers who have been there and done that. (more…)

Meet Plan Go Recap: How To Budget Your Trip

Wednesday, September 22nd, 2010

I was honored to be on the panel of speakers at Meet Plan Go in Austin, and it was a great event. I hope everyone learned something and became inspired to travel! Naturally, I spoke primarily about budgeting (being the co-found of Budget Your Trip and all that).

When it comes to long-term travel, everyone always asks, “how much does it cost?“ My wife and I have done several long-term trips, and over time we’ve learned how to put it all together. It’s hard to get all of that “expertise” out in one night during an event such as Meet Plan Go, so I wanted to try to put some words down in writing that will hopefully educate those of you planning a trip. No, we’re not accountants or financial planners or professional tour guides. We’ve just done this enough times to the point where we’re comfortable hopping on a plane, knowing what to expect when we arrive, and how to figure it all out along the way.

Here’s what I talked about at the Meet Plan Go event in Austin (both on the panel and to individuals after): how to figure out your budget, factors that affect your budget, planning not to have a plan, and how to save money. (more…)

Stephanie’s Adventure at Twenty-Something Travel

Friday, August 20th, 2010

We’ve recently written about various travelers who have become jaded by the status quo of working a nine-to-five job. If you’ve noticed the trend, don’t worry: we’re trying to give you some inspiration to travel, after all. Not surprisingly, Stephanie Yoder falls into this category.

Kaylin in the UK

Tuesday, August 17th, 2010

Wouldn’t it be great to be able to start over, young again, and travel? In our opinion, Kaylin is starting off just right. Having caught the travel bug early in life, at 21 she’s now heading out on a solo trip to the UK in a few weeks. She says she’s always wanted to go to London and the rest of the British Isles, and is a self-proclaimed British TV fanatic (especially Doctor Who). When I asked about her motivations for this trip, she replied:

I love to travel. I’ve been traveling around the US since I was a child, but I first traveled overseas 2 years ago when I studied abroad in France. I also visited Holland while I was there, and loved both countries. And last year I did an archaeological dig in Fiji with the National Science Foundation. This year I really wanted to go back to Europe and I had some money saved up.

Kaylin says that she’s very independent. By traveling solo, she hopes to prove that she can accomplish anything she puts her mind towards.

Stretch Yourself

Tuesday, August 10th, 2010

Nick Laborde is a self proclaimed “crappy employee”. On top of the fact that he doesn’t like to follow rules, he will soon depart on a year long trip around the world. He currently writes about life, works, and his upcoming travel plans at www.stretchd.com. When we asked Nick about his specific travel plans, he said,

I’m not going to plan out my itinerary too much, I just want to go with the flow.

In our opinion, that’s the way to do it. (As we’ve said before, staying flexible is rule number four.)
