The Facilities
Dorms
The dorm rooms are very basic at Hostel One Madrid. They are very clean, with great air conditioning. They have several bunks, depending on the size room you choose. Each bunk has a plug, light and small organizer to keep your electronics charged and close. The bunks are a bit squeaky, but on the more comfortable side. There are no privacy curtains, though.
Each bunk is assigned a large locker with a lock latch (you can rent a lock or use your own). The locker is large enough to store a large backpack, with room left over for any small items. There is also ample room to move about, even in a full room. You will not have to play shuffle to move about at any time.
Private Rooms
Private rooms are available with shared bathrooms. These are a nice option for couples or small groups of friends. The rooms are nicer than the dorms, but they are still basic and very affordable.
Bathrooms
The bathrooms stay very clean. From time to time, the toilet tissue runs out, but you just have to inform the staff and they will fix the issue immediately. Each floor has two toilet rooms, with floor to ceiling doors for privacy. These are combined in a room with three large shower stalls. The showers do not have any toiletries, but do have a caddy to keep all your showering necessities at a convenient height. You can also find one lone toilet room without showers somewhere on the floor.
Bar
While there is no actual bar at Hostel One Madrid, they do have a small selection of canned beers for 1€, with happy hour (2 for 1) drinks at dinner. There are also a few other non-alcoholic options available as well. There is also free after dinner drinks offered from time to time, but those are not guaranteed.
Restaurant
There is no official "restaurant" in the hostel, but they do serve food. Each morning, they serve a small snack, usually breakfast cookies, with tea and coffee. Then, every evening, there is a free dinner cooked by staff at the hostel. There is no choice in what is cooked, but there usually a vegetarian or vegan option for those not eating meat.
Common Areas
There is a small indoor common area connected to the kitchen. You can find a TV always playing great tunes (song recommendations are taken). Benches overflowing with pillows and equipped with many outlets surround a large table that can be used to work, play or eat. The kitchen is also free for any guest to use.
Outdoor Space
A wonderful, large terrace is just outside the common area. Many chairs and tables can be used for all your outdoor needs. One can smoke out here as well. This terrace is open until about midnight or 1:00 a.m. It will just depend on how rowdy the outdoor crowd is, as the entire terrace is surrounded by buildings and some people are early to bed.
The Location
Malasana
Malasana is the hip and edgy area of Madrid and it's home to plenty of bars and restaurants worth visiting. Here, tattoo parlors mix in with nice outdoor cafes to create a diverse ambiance. From the 1970's to the 90's it was a place of sexual revolution and experimentation. Today the dirtier side of the neighborhood has been replaced with higher-end and pricey tattoo parlors, bars, cafes, and shops, leading to an overall decrease in the less desirable aspects of the area.
What's Nearby?
The hostel can be found just off a fairly busy street. You can find markets, shopping and restaurants very close. Within a short walk, you can find even more small bars and clubs for going out. It is in a great location to meet all your needs.
The Hostel One Madrid is within walking distance to several museums, such as the Contemporary Art Museum, the ABC Museum, the Palacio de Liria, and the Plaza de Espana.
Nearby Transportation
There are several bus and metro stops within a short distance of the hostel. The metro will take you straight to the train station and/or airport for entry and exit out of Madrid. The San Bernardo metro station is the closest (Lines 2 and 4), with 3 others being nearby as well which serve other lines. This way you can get anywhere in the city in a hurry.
Activities
This hostel has activities for everyone! There are daily activities for the explorers in the house. These activities range from small city tours to full day trips to surrounding cities. For those that prefer night activities, there are drinking games just after dinner. Then, around 23:00, there is a nightly pub crawl or club outing hosted by the hostel staff.
Amenities
The amenities are great in the hostel. You have access to a full kitchen and refrigerator. Of course, they offer maps for those lone explorers and wifi for those digital lovers. What is really nice is the laundry service. For just 7€, the hostel staff will do your laundry for you! Also, if you need to print any important documents, they are happy to print for you. You have everything you would have at home just at your fingertips.
Staff
The staff is amazing! There are a few full time staffers loaded with knowledge and energy. They will all leave you invigorated and feeling great you were able to be in their presence. There are also a varying number of hostel volunteers, who are backpackers as well. These volunteers are happy to help you with anything you need, even when it is not their shift to work.
Heads Up
There is not anything that is really an annoyance with this place. However, if stairs are an issue for you, it may not be the place for you. All rooms are are at the top of at least one flight of stairs. It is not very handicap accessible. Other than that, it is great!
