Trekking in Nepal

Wednesday, December 15th, 2010

Nepal is mesmerizing and beautiful. It is a land of peaceful mountain people who welcome travelers into their homes and show them the serenity of the land and the friendliness of the nation. During our year-long trip around the world, we spent a month in Nepal. During that time, we spent almost three weeks hiking through the Himalayas, and it was one of the best experiences of our life.

Nepal is a backpacker’s paradise. The land is stunningly gorgeous, the people are generous and friendly, and the prices are dirt cheap. It’s no surprise that both “traveling” backpackers and “hiking” backpackers alike have been flocking to the country for quite some time. But fear not, authentic experiences are still around despite the amount of tourists that visit each year. One of the reasons for this is because the Nepalese take their tourism industry very seriously. They want everyone to have a great time, and they genuinely understand why people visit their amazing country. (more…)

Photo Friday: Vietnam

Friday, December 10th, 2010

In 2006, we spent a month in Vietnam. We crossed the border from China in the north near Sapa, where we spent an amazing few days amongst the Hmong people and their beautifully terraced rice fields. Next we ventured down to Hanoi, and then spent a few days on a boat in the Halong Bay. Afterwards we made our way south, but for now we have plenty of photos to show of Northern Vietnam. If you find yourself wandering around Southeast Asia, don’t miss this amazing country, especially Sapa (sometimes spelled “Sa Pa”) and the surrounding areas. (more…)

Nomad (n): One who leaves his/her comfort zone in search for something other than the status quo

How many times have you been on a trip, something happened, and you thought, “Man, no one is going to believe this story?” Well, we’re here to help. Where Is Jenny?

Monday, November 29th, 2010

Jenny Leonard is a self-proclaimed Location Independent Minimalist, and a skateboarder, too. After the holidays and with the start of the new year, she’ll leave home to travel indefinitely, “Or until the money runs out”, she says. She’ll be blogging at WhereIsJenny.com so that the rest of us can follow her adventure. Naturally, I had a few questions for her before her trip. A trip like this (“lifestyle change” is a better description) takes some time to plan and organize, and we like to find out how others prepare so that we can all benefit for our own trips. (more…)

The Girl Effect

Sunday, September 26th, 2010

As travelers, we see how the rest of the world lives. Sometimes we see beautiful beaches, amazing historical sites, and cities full of culture. But we also see poverty, malnutrition, disease, and a number of other issues that lead to more and more problems. So, as travelers, now that we’re seeing how the rest of the world lives, we have a responsibility to raise awareness of these issues.

Teenage girls play an important factor in local culture, economics, health, crime, and education. Check out this video, and then see The Girl Effect for more information. (more…)

Meet Plan Go Recap: How To Budget Your Trip

Wednesday, September 22nd, 2010

I was honored to be on the panel of speakers at Meet Plan Go in Austin, and it was a great event. I hope everyone learned something and became inspired to travel! Naturally, I spoke primarily about budgeting (being the co-found of Budget Your Trip and all that).

When it comes to long-term travel, everyone always asks, “how much does it cost?“ My wife and I have done several long-term trips, and over time we’ve learned how to put it all together. It’s hard to get all of that “expertise” out in one night during an event such as Meet Plan Go, so I wanted to try to put some words down in writing that will hopefully educate those of you planning a trip. No, we’re not accountants or financial planners or professional tour guides. We’ve just done this enough times to the point where we’re comfortable hopping on a plane, knowing what to expect when we arrive, and how to figure it all out along the way.

Here’s what I talked about at the Meet Plan Go event in Austin (both on the panel and to individuals after): how to figure out your budget, factors that affect your budget, planning not to have a plan, and how to save money. (more…)
