When Is It Worth Spending More on Travel?

You are currently viewing When Is It Worth Spending More on Travel?

Most people would probably agree that saving money on travel is a good thing. After all, if you can spend less on flights, accommodation, transport, or activities, that’s more money available for everything else. As you probably know, that’s the whole idea behind Budget Your Trip. Knowing how much everything costs ahead of time will help you spend less on a trip so that you can travel more, or just save money for other parts of your life.

The problem is that the cheapest option isn’t always the best option, and anyone who’s ever booked something just because it was the lowest price has probably discovered that at some point. Of course, we’re not saying that spending more automatically makes the trip better, because there are plenty of expensive things that aren’t worth the money. So, the question really has to be whether spending more improves the experience enough to justify the cost. Sometimes the answer is yes.

It all comes down to value: are you getting “the best bang for your buck” or are you wasting money instead? It’s your life, and your priorities will determine if you should spend more to get more, and in turn enjoy yourself more while traveling.

So let’s ask ourselves: when is it good to spend more on travel?

When It Saves You A Lot Of Time

One thing that’s easy to underestimate when planning a trip is just how important and valuable your time can be. You might find, for example, that a flight that seems like a bargain actually involves a six-hour layover, and a cheaper hotel might be an hour away from where you actually want to spend your time, and so on.

So initially, those savings can look great, but the reality is that when you’re stuck somewhere and wishing you’d paid a bit more to save time and be closer to the sights and activities, your calculations might start to look a bit different. That’s why spending more can sometimes make sense when it gives you more time to enjoy your holiday.

When It Removes Stress

Some travel expenses don’t necessarily buy luxury, but they do buy simplicity, and that can be really important. This can be worth quite a lot.

The fact is that vacations and holidays involve enough decisions already, because you’ve got to work out where to go, what to do, where to eat, how to get around, and everything else that comes with being somewhere that’s not your home. (And let’s not even get started on how complex travel can be if you have children.) So if spending a bit more removes some of that stress, it can be the right move to make. Travel is supposed to be fun, right?

When It’s Something You’ll Remember

Not all travel spending is equal. For example, most people probably couldn’t tell you exactly what they spent on a taxi three years ago, but they’ll more than likely be able to remember a special experience they had when they were travelling.

That’s why it can sometimes make sense to spend more on the parts of a trip that are likely to stay with you afterwards because when people talk about holidays years later. With such amazing memories, they’re usually talking about experiences rather than practical expenses. Some of these amazing experiences can be activities like scuba diving, visiting a bucket list city on the other side of the world, seeing an exotic animal in the wild, or reaching that high peak with an epic view. Or, sometimes these experiences can be more simple, such as having lunch with a local in a remote corner of the globe, wandering through a market with delicious food, or getting the entire family together for a special occasion.

When You’re Visiting Somewhere Important To You

There’s a difference between a destination you’re just casually interested in, and somewhere you’ve dreamt of visiting for years and years, and if it’s a place you’ve always wanted to see, it could be worth investing a little more to experience it in the way you really want to.

If you don’t, there’s a risk of spending months or even years looking forward to a trip and then finding yourself cutting corners on the bits you were most excited about. Don’t worry, we’re not suggesting you spend money for the sake of it, but it’s wise to be honest about what’s most important and make sure you don’t skimp on it.

When It Makes The Trip Easier

One thing people don’t always think about is how much energy travel takes out of you, but when you factor in that you’re always making decisions, navigating unfamiliar places, carrying luggage, checking times, and trying to keep everything on track, you can see how it might take its toll. This can be both physically and emotionally draining at times.

If you’re worried that might happen, why not book a custom travel tour instead of trying to do it all yourself? You won’t have to make so many decisions all the time. So instead of spending part of the trip trying to organize every detail, you can spend more time focusing on the destination.

When Cheap Ends Up Being Expensive

There’s a really simple way to look at things if you’re not sure when to spend a bit (or perhaps a lot in some cases) more money, and this might be the most important idea of all.

The truth is that sometimes the cheapest option really can end up being the best option, but sometimes that cheap option can lead to extra costs, wasted time, plenty of frustration, or an experience that wasn’t what you hoped for or wanted. And since travel isn’t really about spending the least amount of money possible, and is instead about getting good value for money, you can see that at times, it basically pays to spend more.
