Affordable Travel in the Pacific
Although costly flights and long travel times can deter some from visiting Australia and its Pacific neighbors, Australia and New Zealand's landscapes of mountains, deserts, reefs, forests, beaches and multicultural cities are an eternal draw for travellers. Remote, beautiful and friendly, the Pacific islands' are a paradisiac destination. Hike on a glacier in the land of The Hobbit, count kangaroos on a roadtrip across the Outback, spend a night sharing food and song with a close-knit community of the Pacific Islands or drink Fiji water straight from its source. Adelaide, Auckland, Brisbane, Melbourne, Sydney and Perth, each with a beach on their doorstep, are all fabulous cities to live in and visit. New Zealand may be the capital of adventure sports with bungy jumping, rafting, jet boating, skydiving, zip lining and extreme skiing are just a few of the activities on offer, but the wider Pacific also has plenty to offer to those who want to test their mettle. World-class surfing, snorkelling and diving, swimming with whales, trekking to the top of a volcano, rappelling down a waterfall or kayaking to forgotten beaches. Australia and the Pacific boast some of the best and richest coral reefs in the world, including the largest and most famous, the Great Barrier Reef. Some areas are so vast, with not a single element of human interference in every direction you look. Most of the wildlife is unique; wombats, kangaroos, wallabies, koalas, emus, you won't find anywhere else and all are easy to find. New Zealand has the most endemic species of birds anywhere in the world.

Both Australia and New Zealand have a robust infrastructure for budget travelers, with more backpackers hostels than almost anywhere else in the world. Self-catering will cut costs in both countries since even fast-food restaurants tend to be quite expensive. Camping or going with a group in a campervan is another good way of seeing a lot while spending less money. Overall, prices of most things in all large Australian cities will be similar, so it's pretty easy to figure out your budget once you land in your first stop. Queenstown, in the heart of the South Island, is one of the most popular stops in all of New Zealand. The price is quite reasonable and the surroundings are stunning, but if you are coming to snowboard or bungy jump and so forth, be prepared to see astronomical prices most of the time. Thanks to an incredibly wide range of hostels and budget hotels, Auckland is reasonably priced in general. Most backpackers only stop in the city for a day or two on their way in or out of the country anyway

Sydney is the first stop of most international tourists arriving in Australia, and prices here can be reasonable. Finding bargains in terms of restaurants can be a little challenging. Once you get outside the largest Australian cities the prices go down by a bit, but only by a bit. Melbourne also has a wide variety of hostels, but bunk prices for central places tend to be fairly high. Fortunately, there are plenty of free things to do in both Melbourne as well as Sydney. However most of the major popular attractions are fairly expensive in both cities. Cairns is most popular as the staging area for visits to the nearby Great Barrier Reef. As a smaller city with lower real estate prices, Cairns tends to be a bit cheaper than the huge cities on the list. Still, prices of most things tend to be quite uniform throughout Australia, so hostels and pints of beer are among the few things that are a bit cheaper here. Far more popular with Australians than international travelers, Brisbane is known for its warm and pleasant climate most of the year. The beaches through the whole area are among the best public beaches in the world, but they may not make up for a lack of cultural attractions for some visitors. And again, prices all over Australia tend to be similar, and Brisbane is not a cheap place for most things.
