Taormina on a Budget
A quaint hillside town on the eastern side of Sicily, Taormina is arguably one of the most popular tourist resorts on the island. It's peak season is the months of July and August when Italian and European tourists alike flock to the beaches. During this time it can be crowded and hot, but if you visit during the spring or fall months you might find the crowds slightly less and the weather more comfortable. The town is popular with package tours, which stay at the beach resorts around Giardini Naxos to the south or Letojanni to the north.
Buses are the most convenient way to reach the town, but trains also offer frequent connections. Cruise ships occasionally dock here as well and during these times the crowds are much higher.
In addition to enjoying the coastline, many travelers enjoy walking around the town's main street. There are shops and restaurants, and it's worth checking out the Torre dell'Orogio clocktower. Make sure you buy some wonderful gelato while you're in the area. Another popular activity is to take a themed tour of the area in a Fiat 500. The tours typically start in Taormina, although it is possible to find them in Giardini Naxos as well. The tours take you along Etna Wines Road and you can see some impressive villages such as Savoca and Forza D'Agro.
Around town you'll find plenty of restaurant's, many of which cater specifically to tourists, but the food can be good although overpriced. There are also many souvenir shops around town where you can pick up trinkets to remember your trip by. Don't expect the highest quality however, but it can be fun to browse. One popular souvenir is a bottle of Limoncello, a sweet, lemon based alcoholic drink that is ubiquitous to the area and available in most restaurants.
