Pottery in Jingdezhen, China
Jingdezhen, China is a city located in the Jianxi Province in the southwestern part of the country. It is famous for being the "Porcelain Capital" due to a history of producing pottery for over 1,700 years. This city itself ignites memories of a time when Chinese craftsmanship was at it's peak thanks to their weekly craft shows and art village.
Jingdezhen sees fairly hot summers, with temperatures usually in the 90's Fahrenheit along with a lot of humidity. Winters are cool and dry and generally stay around 50 degrees, while autumn and spring tend to stay in the 60's and bring more sunshine.
Sights
You can't go to the Porcelain Capital and not go to the Jingdezhen Ceramic Museum. The Museum displays famous ceramics from ancient ones to more modern works created by world famous artist Jackson Li. From here, head to the Sculpture Factory where you'll find many different ceramic studios, a craft shop, gallery, and a pottery workshop. In the rural Sanbao International Ceramic Art Village, you'll find another gallery, museum, and workshop to explore.
In the Laoyatan Tile Village, you can watch tile be made by local artisans and in Yaoli Town, you'll find stunning buildings and beautiful landscapes. See where it all began at Gaolin, a simple hill that is famous for producing kaolin clay, which was the ancient material used to create pottery. And once you've had your fill of artistry, take a stroll through People's Park in the evening to watch the couples dance.
Neighborhoods
Jingdezhen's main district, Zhushan, is where you'll find the majority of the shops, accommodations, and tourist attractions. Jingdezhen is also a great base city when traveling to smaller areas in the Jianxi Province due to them having a large number of accommodations. Some nearby cities which are great to travel to from Jingdezhen include:
Lushan, a beautiful mountain area that is a little off the beaten path. Lushan is great for hiking and exploring the old buildings left behind by British colonists.
Huangshan Scenic Area, which is on the UNESCO World Heritage List and is one of the top scenic attractions in China. Huangshan is a granite mountain with plenty of hiking opportunities and cable car rides.
Wuyuan, the beautiful city known for its ancient, historically rich, villages. It is well worth buying a day pass to the villages and touring around to explore the beautiful Chinese countryside.
Activities
The most popular activity in Jingdezhen is the Saturday Creative Market where people gather from all over the region to the courtyard of the Pottery Workshop Creative Market. Here, artists sell their goods and display their stunning works of art in their own stalls which you can peruse at your leisure. You'll find everything from classic pottery to contemporary designs, jewelry, sculptures, and much more.
Get away from the city and go for a hike around Yaoli Town. With a 500-year-old history dating to the Ming Dynasty, you'll have plenty explore. There are a number of hills reaching over 600 feet that are full of beautiful landscapes and waterfalls, well worth a day of hiking through.
Food and Dining
Jingdezhen offers a number of restaurants and tea shops to enjoy a meal in. While there are very few English menus, you're bound to find something delicious and within your price range no matter where you stop. SanBao ShiGuang JiuBa restaurant is a popular option when in Jingdezhen where you'll find a welcoming atmosphere and delicious eats. For good coffee, head to Cafe YoYoHouse to enjoy a relaxing cup before hunting for porcelain.
Transportation
Jingdezhen has a domestic airport as well as train and bus stations, making it a fairly easy city to get in to. There is plenty of public transportation in the city, with over 20 bus lines that run throughout the city and countryside. Taxis are also plentiful and usually the easiest means of transportation for tourists.
